Angie, I have never heard of alcoholism skipping a generation There is so much information available on the familial aspect of addictions out there that it is tough to keep up with all of it. I have even read one study that says children of alcoholics are LESS likely to develop alcoholism. This certainly seems to be the case in my family. We had TWO alcoholic parents and of eight of us kids, only one was an alcoholic. In my own family, it seems to develop in the men more than the women. Nearly all of the men are alcoholics. My grandmothers were not but my mother and an aunt were. There are still so many unknowns with alcoholism and addictions. I have also read that the addictive personality theory is bunk. I need to do some more research/reading on addictive personalities before I could even think of speaking about it.

yeah, both of my parents are/were alcoholics. My dad died from it and my mom has a little better grip on it. My only brother however battles his addiction every day of his life. I guess I'm the lucky one. I'm just addicted to caffeine. I have experimented in the past and never grew an addiction to even cigarettes! I do wonder if there is an addiction gene or is it a combonation of genetics and environment. Why did me and my brother go in two different directions? If anything, my upbringing was a little harder because every time my brother messed up, I was blamed for it. They said he copies everything I do so I must be influencing him. The thing is, I have never done half of what my brother has done. This includes several illegal activities that he has done jail time for.
Now in the case of my former friend, she had the normal suburban lifestyle and an alcohol / drug free home. How did she end up as an alcoholic/drug user? I guess I'm just pondering the possibilities.
