Posted almost 4 years ago I am so excited. I have lost 23 pounds so far. I am also now a Certified Team Leader with Dr. Ray Strand and his Healthy for Life program. I have a group starting in my home on August 11th, 99% of whom are nurses. It feels great to use my hursing in a wellness/prevention mode. Right where I want to be!!! Joyce Harrell, RN, OCN

| Posted almost 4 years ago Hi,
This is Nancy and I do pediatric homecare for medically fragile children. Way off topic. I seen your weight loss and immediately thought of my friend who lives in Dallas and is a herbalist as well as MSN "RN' - great lady. She lost over a 100# on the herbal medication and now she is helping others to do the same - she is working with a herbalist - so best of both world.
Not sure what your ideal wt you want to be but wanted to say " Way to Go"

| Posted almost 4 years ago Thanks for the encouragement. I have now lost 30 pounds. I am very tall, and solid. People do not believe me when I tell them how much I weigh, and how much more I want to loose. I am just enjoying being healthy right now. Joyce Harrell, RN, OCN

| Posted over 3 years ago I belong to http://www.squidoo.com (Squidoo). It's a site where you can create web pages (called lenses) about just about any subject you want. I wrote a lens called How to Cook Healthy, http://www.squidoo.com/healthy-eating-mediterranean. It contains some great Mediterranean style recipes I got from Better Homes & Gardens. I hope you'll check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks! |

| Posted over 3 years ago Thanks for the encouragement. I am working on that last 30 pounds. I am very motivated. Plus since I am teaching these classes now, and looking at my role as being an example, I do let up every once in a while, but feel I need to go the distance. For myself foremost, but then for those I want to help... Joyce Harrell, RN, OCN

| Posted about 3 years ago About a year and a half ago, I weighed 300 Lbs. I am now 150. I wish I could post a before and after picture, but don't know how to do so. Addendum, I just figured out how to post it in my profile. I did it by doing the things that I was taught to teach othersto do! I go to yoga class, Pilates, step classes, run 70 minutes at 7.5 miles per hour, and take body toning classes. I eat 5 small meals that are balanced, low fat, low salt, low sugar. 2 portions of fresh fruit, a a lot of raw veggies. I drink 8 glasses of water a day, and with all that running, it's easy to do! But I started out slowly. When I first got on the tread mill, all I could do was walk. I suffered from sleep apnea, and now it's gone. I didn't take any pills, have any surgery, or fall for any gimicks. I just made up my mind to take control of my life and change it. Funny, as it's been nearly 2 years now, my mom and I went to cheese cake factory, and I ordered a piece of cheese cake. I totally hated it! I lost my sweet tooth. Staying away from sweets for such a long time, I've lost the desire for sweets. It made me happy not to like it!. You stick with eating healthy, but never forget to get some exersize in there too. It's good for you physically and mentally. And you can make so many friends at the gym. Good for you ... keep it up. |

| Posted about 3 years ago Thank you Larry for sharing! How inspiring. I am the teacher and the student! I certainly agree with you that sugar is the culprit. I also eat small meals several times per day. I will be getting on here more. I started off hot on heavy on Nursing Link. Then, my oldest son with PTSD from Iraq ended up in the ICU with an accidental overdose from all the meds the VA had him on, and then watching my daughter's little boy while she finished nursing school, has just completely overtaken me. Well, she is now out of school! and I am ready to post again! Joyce Harrell, RN, OCN

Since I started nursing school I have put on some extra weight, but I am hoping to eat better and exercise more this semester. My goal is to be back at my starting weight by graduation in August. Hopefully I will get to post my success story too!

| Posted about 3 years ago Rebecca, Just remember to make healthy food choices everytime you have that choice. You don's need the stress of trying to change drastically on top of nursing school. Add water. Stop soda's. Choose healthy every chance you get. Little things will make a difference. One Step At a Time.... Joyce Harrell, RN, OCN

| Posted almost 3 years ago Getting ready to head out to the gym today. I have also discovered "Green Smoothies". Sounds gross, but I am enjoying the taste, and the health benefits. I still have a few pounds to lose. Getting closer to my target weight all the time! Hope everyone is having a nice day! Joyce Harrell, RN, OCN

| Posted almost 3 years ago Great to hear of your weight loss. As nurses, we need to exemplify good health and practice what we preach. Congratulations and continued success! Back in April 2010 I decided I needed to increase my activity level and return to an active lifestyle. When I was in my 20's I worked out 2-3 hours a day four times a week; and, I rode the MS150 on my bicycle because I was in great shape. As years went by, I had allowed my asthma and allergy problems to hold me back; and, nursing hours only contributed to my procrastination. I workout in the gym now for 1-2 hours a day at least 3 times per week, go swimming and bicycling. I feel great physically and mentally! Oh and I have lost over 22 pounds in the past three months..Exercise, portion control, stress management and healthy food choices have helped me achieve balance in life. The weight loss is just an added benefit. I am now striving to be a healthy nurse so I can be strong for my patients/families. Stay healthy! |
