Need help, wife didn't pass NCLEX :(

Posted almost 4 years ago Hi nurses, I was hoping one of you kind hearts could help me out with something. My wife recently didn't pass NCLEX and is bummed out about it because it may have cost her a job that was waiting for her. She is of course determined to try it again and pass and me being the helpless husband was hoping one of you can maybe help me be not so helpless? I've been looking everywhere for this "Suzanne's plan" for NCLEX. I know it was part of that "other" nurses forum and that is no longer posted there. To make it worse, seems like those who did have it aren't allowed to talk or post about it. Anyway, I'm asking if perhaps one of you who have it could email it to me? I would never reveal where I got it from, but people seem to swear by it and my wife did NOT have a good experience at Kaplan, so I'm thinking this could maybe be up her alley. I've looked everywhere for it online and only got the first part of the plan, about doing the Saunders tests and all that. Again, anyone who can help would get a huge thank you from someone who really would appreciate it, and hopefully give me wife some hope? Okay, I want to get a big hug from her too when she passes. :) Thanks for reading this and god bless. My email is crlemos@yahoo.com. Thanks again! |

| Posted almost 4 years ago Hi dear I must commend you for soliciting help for your wife. First, your wife should find out her status with that job: if they will give her more time or if she's lost the job. I have heard of the Suzanne Plan, but I haven't been able to find any information on it. However, I will recommend another resourse. ATI.www.atitesting.com I had the opportunity to study with test questions from ATI and they were very challenging. They do a really good job in test preparation. In fact I find those questions better to study with than the questions offered with Kaplan. I also studied with the book NCLEX-RN Questions & Answers Made Incredibly Easy which has about 3,500 questions in it. This book is very informative and provides a lot of practice doing questions. I hope I have been some help to you. Please continue to support your wife in this endeavor. It's not easy but she can do this, she will become a registered nurse. God bless |

I've looked for the plan. Suzanne apparently was a moderator on allnurses.com. She would only give out the plan in bits and peices, after students finished each individual section, whatever they were. Then she left as a moderator and the thread was closed "to protect her copyright." This sounds fishy to me. I have no idea what the plan was but if it was so great, why did allnurses.com close the thread? Why hasn't she published it? I smell a scam. Try Kaplan's reivew, or similar review source. There are several and they are all pretty good. Practice NCLEX questions. Do 10 in 15 minutes. Use a kitchen timer. When you get to 100%, do 10 in 14 minutes, then 13 minutes and so on. This trains your brain in how to read, interpret and pick the correct answer quickly. Move on and don't go back. Since your wife only failed the first time, she needs to review her resources, practice NCLEX questions, and possibly take a review course before retaking it. Odds are she'll be successful the second time. Her employer may allow her to continue in a CNA role until she passes or she may be out of luck. But once she gets her license, the facility will likely rehire her. If she is not successful after a second attempt, she needs to take a refresher course of some kind and work with a tutor to zero in on what her difficulty is. The NCLEX sends you a list of your weak areas to help you study. There is no magic plan to pass NCLEX. You have to be able to analyze and synthesize information, and think critically. You can get every knowledge based question right, and still fail NCLEX. That's because NCLEX is really testing your ability to use good judgement, to USE what you know!
Good luck |

| Posted almost 4 years ago I'm a member at allnurses too for the simple fact that I am interested with the said plan. Just read last night that she is no longer offering the plan. Her reason, she doesn't want people to violate her privacy as well as the plan itself was formulated by Ms. Suzanne herself. |

Like I said earlier: I smell a scam. You don't withhold information to protect your privacy on the Net. You withhold it because you are afraid of what will happen if you are found and identified. If she'd said she was preparing to publish the plan, I'd still be skeptical but would hold an open mind. But this excuse is crap, and her "plan" probably is too. |

| Posted almost 4 years ago 19 years ago, before I sat for boards, I spent about $200 on a 2 day crash course, that guaranteed you would pass or a full refund. I can't recall the name of it, but it was 2 full days, and included a coursebook. I imagine, that same course would be pretty expensive now, but well worth it. |

Might have been Kaplan. My nursing students use ATI throughout their program. They have non-proctored practice exams they can take unlimited times, plus 2 proctored exams each semester to measure their progress. Then they take the Kaplan course just before graduation. We have a high NCLEX pass rate. The more you practice test taking, the better you get at it. It is a real skill. |

| Posted almost 4 years ago She can also try The Hurst Review. I believe that it is offered online and/or in preson. The review was great when I took it about 6 years ago. Marlena Hurst made the systems make sense. A few classmates and I took it our third semester and felt that she was better than our teachers. We weren't afraid of the "hard" subjects like heart anymore. The review was offered and we refreshed on it before taking boards with no additional cost. She guaranteed that we would pass the test or we could continue without cost or receive a refund. Most hospitals here even paid for the Hurst Review so we still received our money back. Long story short- we passed it first go round. So I tell everyone to take the Hurst Review. |

| Posted almost 4 years ago My nursing program required that we take a NCLEX review class right after graduation (we had paid for it as part of our tuition). The main thing I took away from the review was how to read the questions and evaluate the selections to pick the correct answer. Learning how to read the NCLEX questions is a key factor in passing the board exam. Actually, I wish I had this information at the start of the nursing program, I would have scored higher on my exams. We were always told to, "read the question", but I think this injunction becomes something like earwash. Kaplan has a section on reading the question. My pre-NCLEX class book also had an excellent section on what "reading the question" meant. I can't stress the importance of this enough. I passed NCLEX not only the first time, but with the minimum number of questions - I owe my sucess to the test taking and question reading techniques I was taught. Additionally, I must have done at least 3000 practice questions before taking my test. I reviewed 100 questions a day at a minimum. Someone else in this post had a similar comment.

| Posted almost 4 years ago Hello Everyone, I'm new to nursing link. I graduated from an excelerated nursing program in Oklahoma in April. I havent taken boards yet because I had some problems with my application. I have been a LVN for 27 years, but I feel very stupid when it comes to studying and taking this exam. I a'm scared to death of failing this test. I'm thinking of taking the hurst review before I challenge this test next month which is September. Anyone have any other thoughts on this? |

As long as it is a reputable review course, then I think that is a great idea. I'm not familiar with Hurst, but it seems legit and on a similar par with Kaplan, Saunders, and ATI. The best benefit of review courses is not only to go through the content you need for NCLEX, but on how to analyze and apply what you know, which is the most important part of NCLEX. A Kaplan instructor told me, "NCLEX doesn't care how much you know. You can get every knowledge/comprehension question right and still fail. NCLEX cares that you can apply what you know." It's the analysis and synthesis questions, those critical thinking skills that you need to be successful on NCLEX. A review course will devote time on how to read a question to effectively analyze and synthesize your knowledge to select the correct question. |

| Posted almost 4 years ago This so called "Suzanne's Plan" was pulled from allnurses some time ago, and they are not giving any information on it. No one seems to be able to find this plan, and I suspect it is a scam. If someone would like to prove me wrong, I would love to see a copy of it. |

| Posted over 3 years ago Just wanted to give you guys a quick update. Thank you for all the kind words and support. We never did track down SUZANNE'S PLAN but it turns out we didn't need it. Just found out this AM that my wife passed NCLEX on her 2nd try!!! I'm so happy for her and it's good to see her smiling again without all that stress. She focused on a few things this time around. The two biggest things she leaned on were EXAM CRAM (which we checked out at the local library which also still had the CD). The thinking there was to help with her knowing her content well. Although most people know that content and knowlege questions aren't "passing" questions on NCLEX, we reasoned that when it comes to the "passing" application and analysis questions, you can't apply and analyze something if you don't know what you're applying and analyzing. So she focused heavy on reviewing all things in Exam Cram, especially meds. She knew her stuff already but found a lot of stuff she forgot she learned in med-surg 1 and stuff like that. She also talked to her friends that had a good experience at Kaplan and realized she was shortchanged by her teacher. That being said, some of her friends had better experiences and helped fill in the blanks in terms of the "strategy" that Kaplan teaches. She practiced that strategy using the Kaplan book she bought at the local Borders (she turned in her other Kaplan course book when we got the refund). Also, she went 150 questions before running out of time. She was freaked out and sure again that she failed, but she indeed passed. So all the above helped along with, I'm sure, many of your prayers. Thanks a bunch and just wanted to share that Suzanne's plan isn't the end all be all. |

| Posted over 3 years ago I have used Suzannes plan and I can honestly say it gave me the confidence I needed to take the NCLEX. I have extreme test anxiety and I am a very poor test taker, I took the boards once and passed. The reason Suzanne gives her plan out in "pieces" is so that it is done correctly. She as well as other people who have used her plan guarentee a first time pass rate only if it done exactly as written. In order for it to bedoen correctly and not rushed the only info she would publish on allnurses.com was the first step because that needed to be completed before anything else and once completed and the test was schedule then you could email her with that info and she would send you the rest of her plan in order for her to keep her reputation of having a first time passage rate which was only guarenteed if done exactly as written she did not want people skipping ahead and doing the other steps because the first step needed to be done first before anything else if she published all of it and someone did not complete it as written and failed the boards on their first attempt they would then be under the assumption that it did not work and therefore loose the confidence that the plan itself gives you. I have recently went on allnurses and realized she retired as a moderator and the first step to her plan is no longer published. I just wanted to clarify the reasoning behind not getting the whole plan all at once and for it not being published she just wanted to ensure that it was done correctly to guarentee the first time passage rate, otherwise it would not be "her" plan and she could no longer guarentee and be confident that those who tried it would pass the first time. |

| Posted over 2 years ago i posted this in the student section but i'll post it here again for you:
Hi everyone. i just wanted to let you all know about an experience i had before, during and after taking NCLEX. i spent 3 months studying saunders test prep, ati and rereading chapters in my books as well as my class notes. i felt great about the material and scheduled the test. well as it turned out, NCLEX changed the test exactly 2 weeks before i took it (they made the questions more challenging and raised the passing score). when i sat down (feeling confident), got comfortable and started the test. i was shocked! nothing seemed as clear cut as any of my study material and i was a mess. i was unaware at that time that the test had been revamped. after finding out i hadnt passed (no surprise to me), i went back to all the same books that i felt i knew inside and out though i felt that i would be facing the same challenges when i retook the test because i was studying from the same material. it was accidentally that i found out that the test had been changed and i called the National Council of the State Board of Nursing. After speaking with several different representatives (who all went out of their way to try to console me, I was lucky enough to speak with one of the highest ups in the organization who was very generous with her time and advice. the end of the story is that one of the people i spoke with, recommended an online program called: learning extension. the website is: learningext.com NCSBN Learning Extension it is an online prep course which you pay for but i understand it is very, very helpful. at that time, the published test prep books available had not yet caught up or reflected the new challenges on the NCLEX. as i understand it, this is the most up to date study material for NCLEX and may possibly even be affiliated with the National Council State Board of Nursing. i ended up doing kaplan and that combined with the intense studying i had done with the older prep books, i passed, but not without having to sweat out the rationalization for almost every single question i was given. if anyone tries this "learningext.com", i'd like to know what you think. it may help many other students too. |
