Hi, 20 yrs nursing mostly home care, psych, millitary. I recently went back to the hospital and worked some medical, hated it....forgot it was so terrible....thinking I should brush up on it or some crazy thing. There are a lot of ED jobs out there. In the mean time find a resident you like and try to spend time with that person. If you ask, a lot of older folks have some great stories and a lot to give, learn about. Also you could get into the teaching end if it is a large place they need someone like you to teach CPR, BLS etc. Ask your manager. I have always like more independent jobs, could be similar with ED. You could also teach NVCI or MANDT it is easy to get certified to teach, get your agency to pay for it.

27 years of nursing -one of the most recent jobs was a LTC. I hated it! I, too, had always said I'd never work in a nursing home. It was sad, depressing and the hardest job in nursing I've ever had. I stayed there for 2 1/2 years for a variety of reasons. But the main reason was I cared about the patients. The facility didn't care about them-they were interested in making money. Alot of them had no visitors. We were the ones they saw every day and came to depend on. While you are there, just do the best job you can. You'll never know how many peoples' lives you will touch.

I have 1/2 the number of years of experience you do, however, I got my start, and my love for the nursing profession in LTC. Charlita's right...you'll never know how many lives you will touch. These people often have wonderful stories of their life experiences to tell, and no one to talk to, or spend quality time with. You can make a huge difference by being genuinely interested...and you might be surprised at who'd notice the difference. I agree with Kat88 too. There are always opportunities to walk down a different path, it's just a matter of finding them. LTC may not be your favorite place to be, but there may be a reason you're there. Good luck in all that you do.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, worn out and screaming "Woo-hoo"!!!

I agree with the other nurses on this forum. You may be in LTC for a reason. God is good about putting us where we can be used. I am a hospice nurse. I will pray for you to be returned to ED. I am sure with your experience we need you in ED. I know about LTC as I have worked it too. I loved the patients, but the owners were awful. Can "buy and sell nurses a dime a dozen" is what we heard. God bless you and I hope you will just go and apply at some of your ED and see what happens. You never know.
