Posted almost 4 years ago How many people went for an RN to BSN and worked part time? Is is possible? I'm looking at an online RN to BSN program. I'm worried it will be too stressful to try to work full time so I'm considering part time. Any advice???? Thanks, SDW |

Posted almost 4 years ago You may want to look at the online program at Texas Women's University in Denton, TX. I understand it is all online with no required visits to the campus as required by many other such programs. Good luck.

Posted over 3 years ago It is stressful, but I managed it. I worked part time, weekends, at a local hospital--worked every weekend during the semester for 2 years, and worked full time during semester breaks. That got me between 16-24 hours a week (depended on if I worked 8's or 12's). I lived on campus, and was on the campus meal plan, which really saved me a bundle in living expenses: internet and basic cable tv were free, and I didn't have to worry about other utilities. I worried a bit about living on campus at my age--I was 33 at the time, newly divorced. However, I found I was not the only "older than average student" living on campus. There were a number of men and women my age and older. One guy was a retired Navy in his late 40's, who was getting a degree in retirement so he could launch a new career. The younger kids didn't seem to mind us older students--I had no lack for friends, and most of them were not nursing students but they were the more serious student crowd not the party til you drop crowd. In addition to working off campus, I also had two part time jobs ON campus: 10 hours a week from each job. I worked for the School of Nursing as a lab assistant, and for the school newspaper on the editorial staff (it was a paid position). It was time consuming but they each had their perks: the nursing job got me letters of recommendation and helped launch me into nursing education later on. The school paper job had the benefit of better internet access, and computers (mine died a slow death while I was in school, and I couldn't afford to fix or replace it) to do my schoolwork on. Some schools offer dorms for families. I would definately live on campus again if I needed to. It was a great experience compared to living on my own.

Posted over 3 years ago I'm in an online RN to BSN program at present. I'm working 40+ with a house full of kids as well. I'd say it ought to be no problem if you only work part-time.

Posted over 3 years ago Im doing the RN to BSN onlne myself. Im able to work, my hours are flexable..........its funny, I was worried about not having enough time to study when Im having long work weeks, but I tend to do better with my organization to studying when I stay busy. If I have too much time to goof off, I get into stuff on TV................I didnt get crap done during American Idol season. We only have one heart, take care of it! Angie

Posted over 3 years ago Hi SDW, We have an online RN to BSN program that was created with the working adult in mind. Like the Texas Women's University program, all the classes are online and the on-site clinicals required for the program can take place wherever you are located in the United States. Many of our nurses in the program are working either part or full time while going to school. At any time throughout the program you are only taking one or two courses. If you want to get a better idea of what going to school online will be like, you might want to check out our Guide to Online College for Adults. Good luck!
