Low Census Problems

Posted almost 4 years ago Hi, My facility for the entire summer has been having problems with unstable census. Is anyone else having this problem in there place of employment? We go from having full census being short staff and then to low census and getting downstaffed/canceled in the matter of a week. Thank goodness for per diem jobs. Unfortunately not all nurses have two jobs and many have been concerned about frequently getting canceled. On top of the cancelation the pay is taken from vacation time/PTO which are all in one bank. |

Posted almost 4 years ago It is common in summer and spring for censuses to be low. It is also routine to LCD staff and make them use their PTO. This info is usually divulged clearly during orientation. Many facilities check to see if LCD staff will cover other areas. If not they deserve to have a hard time attracting and keeping nurses.

Posted almost 4 years ago Our hospital had to shut down their skilled nursing floor because of low census this year. It put a llot of folks out of work because they could not absorb all of the staff in other places.

Posted almost 4 years ago Thanks for the reply Mr Brown and Shan. I am used to the census being low in the summer just feels that this summer has been a roller coaster ride, ups and downs more so than in the past.

Posted almost 4 years ago Same here. Census being low has caused the observation unit to be closed for almost 2 weeks. As a result, I (who is in inner house pool) have been getting my hours cut. Claire Kruszka
