Giving hope

Posted almost 4 years ago I'm currently a nursing student working as a PSW at a nursing home and I'm currently struggling with one of the residents. She's bed-bound and has extremely limited movement in her entire body, so she's entirely dependent on someone else to provide everything, even something as simple as giving her a drink of water. She's almost always in pain, mostly due to these horrible bed sores (despite her being on an air matress that automatically turns her q20min). Recently, she's also become very frustrated with her situation and I can't blame her. Bed-bound, totally dependent, in pain, and stuck in the same room for days on end. Also recently, she's become a bit confused and has is a bit feverish, adding to her frustration when she makes impossible requests that we can't fulfill (for example, she once told me she was upside-down and told me to put her right-side up...? or sometimes, she insists she can walk and demands that we get her out of bed) So, in all, there's not a whole lot in my power that I can do to help her. At the same time, though, I want to do something for her - give her hope, give her something that will make her limited world just a little bit better. The thing is, I have no idea how and, based on her progress, it's evident she's declining. Anyone have any advice? Similar stories? |
