I am presently in school for Medical Assisting in my 4th term of 6. I am 48 years old and do not know if I should continue or just be content with this. This is a career move for me. I was working in the mortgage industry for 15 years. My mother and mother-in-law both had cancer at the same time and I was caring for both of them. Knowing that I could work with them I decided to go into the medical field. We unfortunately lost both of them in 2006. My mother-in-law passed away in January and my mother in July. It was a very trying time. Hopefully helping other people will be better for me. I feel stupid being on this site because all of you are either LPNs or RNs but I am just a Medical Assistant. Should I not even be on this site?

You are not "just" anything. You are a valuable member of the health care team. Don't ever forget that it takes the work of all members of the team to do the job right. You are often the eyes and ears of the nurses. If you chose to go on to further your education wonderful. If not, remember even the dirtiest and lowliest job must be done and there is always pride to be taken in a job well done. At 48 years old you have courageously gone back to school and are pursuing a new career. My hat is off to you. To do so after such loss is amazing. I lost my mother last year and was already in nursing school, our mothers are proud of us. We have to be proud of ourselves. We make a team, medical assistants or CNAs, LPNs, and RNs.

I think it takes alot of courage to change professions at any age. My advice would be to try your hand at medical assisting and see how you like it. It may not be what you think it will be. And if you decide you like it, then you could further your education by becoming a LPN or RN. I'm sorry for your losses. My mom passed away a year ago so I can understand how hard it must have been for you and to lose two! You probable learned alot taking care of them-about Dr.s and nursing and how it feels to be the patient. This should help you alot. This site is for anyone in the medical profession or anyone thinking about the medical profession. You belong here as much as anyone else. Good luck and Welcome!

I am currently a Medical Assistant and doing my prereq's for the RN program. My mom died a year ago too and another lady that was like my mom died this year from cancer. After my mom died I decided to go back and get my RN. Where I live there were no jobs for me. As a medical assistant you can only work in doctors offices. I wanted to work in home health and only LPN's or RN's can work in home health (other than CNA's). You have every right to be here. You are still in the medical field. I worked in a gastroenterology office and we had an LPN that worked there and I did everything she did except for IV's. Some medical assistants in different states are allowed to do IV's too. Good luck in the medical assisting. It is very rewarding!

Hi i to worked as a medical assistant before going on for nursing. You are a valuble part of the healthcare team. Go on for nursing if that's what you want to do however you can find satisfaction in being an MA. I would just warn you not to go through an associates degree MA course or and MA course that takes longer than 1 year. You will not make any difference in pay. And by the time you finish you could have been an LPN. But do whatever works best for you. It's all about finding job satisfaction.
