Got the new Registered Nurse magazine this past week and there were several interesting, and sad, articles written by RN's about the fact that their facilities do not have a company pension. Although many of you have a 401 or 403b that is entirely different than a company pension. Neither of the hospitals in town here have a pension, because they are so cheap, but neither hospital has a union to try to get a pension started. If you think unions dont do anything for nurses then I urge to to read the articles. Its a disgrace that an RN with 47 years experience STILL HAS TO WORK because she cant get by  on the measly 800.00/month she gets from social security. Who takes care of the caregivers when they cant do it anymore because they are physically unable to do this demanding job..................? I urge everyone to join the NNOC and stand up for what we DESERVE   UNION NOW!

After spending the majority of my nursing career working for non-union hospitals, I made it a priority to relocate near a union hospital.  That is where I work now.  I have no intention of leaving unless I absolutely have to.  After years of getting screwed over, I love working for a union hospital.

As for the fat cats they are the people that need a pension LEAST of all. The CEO at my last hosp was making 784,000.00/yr and the other hosp the CEO was making 900K/yr. Do you think any of them have to worrry about where your next meal is coming from? Seems unlikely.....

A defined benefit pension ( What you are refering to) is the WORSE possible way to retire... you mostly at the mercy of the financial health of the institution that is controlling it.. and unions will not make it better... ask a UAW member about that.

Anyone who is working should be in a 401K or 403B , Roth IRAs and other individual IRAs......

I feel sorry for people who have to rely on a 401k or 403b.  I have a pension because I am a state employee.

401k and 403b balances have shrunk and still not recovered in spite of the current bull market.  I also have a 403b, and it is still down 23%.  My 401k from a previous job is worthless.  But my state pension will remain secure.  I'm looking seriously into buying bonds.  I don't trust Wall Street.

My best wishes to the NNOC folks.  I wish you'd come to North Carolina.  The two big hospital organizations where I live both seriously need to be unionized.
