Posted over 5 years ago How many public health nurses are out there? I am a new public health nurse and love it. I should have done public health nursing from the beginning. I know I am going to lose some of my mechanical nursing skills, but I am definately sharpening my critical thinking and case management skills. Not to mention the act of helping children every day! |

Posted over 5 years ago I worked as a public health nurse. I loved it. Wish I hadn't quit. But I did because the RN I was working with was using me as her secretary-getting me to do the paperwork and all the petty stuff she didn't want to do. I was used and abused. But I still loved the job.

Posted over 5 years ago I am sorry that you had that experience. What did you do in Public Health? I am in Child Health. I can't believe it took me so long to find this side of nursing!

Posted over 5 years ago I worked in a Prevention clinic in a poor neighborhood. It was a novel idea but unfortunately didn't last. We did physicals and saw patients but mostly concentrated on education on diabetes, hypertension , high cholesterol. and wt loss. We also went to homes with the diabetic teaching and filling of insulin syringes. We gave out free medication as well. We also did the physicals for the police and fire depts. We held clinics for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Now they have a bus that travels around doing that. I thoroughly enjoyed it until right at the end.

Posted over 5 years ago Wow! I am sure you guys did a lot of good. Let me guess though....programran out of money? I am slowly learning that PH programs are an ebb and flow of political money. It is ridiculous that the government is able to tell a community what is medically beneficial and not the other way around!
