A gentleman called the triage line I worked for and asked if he could use Hartz products on his Mama? When asked for clarification ie does she have lice? He said "Mama is clean she has fleas?"
Was advised not to use Hartz products on mother and call her doctor so he could accurately diagnose the problem.

That's funny - it would have been funnier if you referred him to a vet - it would probably have gotten you in trouble, but it would have definitely pilled on the humor. Anybody else have any funny phone triage stories?

I work in a nursing home. We have a lady that we have to take a spare of everything into her room for her imaginary dog. She refuses all care otherwise. You have to "take of "Mitzi"" before she will let you take care of her!! Sometimes if I'm in a time crunch I'll have to tell her that's Mitzi is sleeping and I'll come back and do her later. It only works occasionally.

Sometimes life is stranger than fiction. Good grief!

Imaginary dog? Did she have a real dog named Mitzi that died?

Hilarious conversation! I think I'll have to keep a look out for patients with imaginary pets in my unit and transfer them to Western Psych pronto.

Things like this happened all the time during my 4 year stint as a phone triage nurse in Austin, Texas. Some of them were simply funny while others were pitiful.

I have a pt that has a couple stuffed animals that are dogs. She kisses them and hugs them and feeds her food to them. We have to take them to laundry cuz they get so dirty and she thinks they are at the vet getting a bath. Sometimes the only way she will let me take her to the bathroom is if I tell her that her doggie wants her to go and she'll listen.
