Posted over 3 years ago Anyone else taking or thinking about taking the bridge programs offered for paramedic to RN? I am currently in 1 and the switch from thinking as a paramedic to thinking like a nurse is quite difficult. |

| Posted over 3 years ago Most paramedics I have known (I'm an ER nurse) don't fully appreciate the differences between RNs and paramedics. Don't get me wrong--I have high regard for paramedics and EMTs. You do a difficult job. It is not easy providing care in people's homes, when they are in crisis and not thinking clearly. Paramedics think in the now. They have to--that's their role: stabilize the patient and get them to the doc. Nurses have to think in the term, and to do that, nurses have to understand pathological processes in more detail, and think of long term care issues that paramedics just don't have the time to bother with. So medics tend to be more task oriented. Nurses can't be. Give yourself more time to adjust to the nursing role. In the long run, I think you will find it worth the effort. I know many paramedics who made the jump to RN, and they all thought it was worth it. If you are a working paramedic, ask the RNs in the ER if any of them were paramedics before they were nurses and ask them how they made the transition. It might give you some ideas, and a support base to work from. |
