 Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone knows of any hospitals that accept new grads in NJ/NY/PA area?I feel so useless without a job. I passed my boards earlier this month and have been applying to many hospitals. However, most of them require experience. How are we suppose to gain experience if no one gives us a chance?

Im sorry to hear about the job problem.   I tried to post something on the job board here, but when I went back to see if it showed up it didnt.  Mollen is a company that has booths in Walmarts, Kroger, mallls..........etc.   for flu shots.   I am not with this service but as Christmas is approaching I might check it out too.   You can do a search for Mollen or look under flu vaccination clinics.  My pal is an LPN and works full time but her hours have been lessened about a month ago so she was looking for something part time to supplement.  Good look with the job hunting. I think they have the booths all over the country.

We only have one heart, take care of it!

From my own experience and from reading on another nursing messsage board, I think this problem is nationwide.  A lot of new grads are having a hard time finding a job.  I've had my license for 6 months and still haven't found anything.  I did sign up for Mollen and even though it's only temporary, it's something.  These tough economic times have really put a damper on the market.  Try volunteering at a local hospital or clinic.  This can give you the opportunity to network and also gain some type of experience.  I volunteer as an RN at a clinic several times a week.  I'm gaining some experience and getting to know some of the doctors that volunteer too.  Hope this helps and good luck to you.

I passed my NCLEX a few months ago here in Jacksonville, Fl.  It's not just you.  Even a local Baptist Health job fair which is going on TODAY said in their advertisement "EXPERIENCED Rn's please attend" in big bold letters.  You would think that the long term care facilities would be willing to take you but, nope, same story.  I am going to go the volunteer route, just so I can get the experience.  It's still going to be rather disheartening knowing that I am bound to run into nursing students who I went to school with and have were fotunate enough to get hired.

How depressing.

I think the volunteering route is the best idea. Ideally, you would've been volunteering while going to school, but it's also ideal with a part-time job so that you can make some kind of money.

I know it's frustrating... everyone asking for experience but how can you have experience if no one gives you a chance, right? Well the answer to that is volunteering. It may be disheartening but think of it this way... nursing and health care aren't the only industries that ask for experience. Pretty much any job is going to. If a journalism student wants to work at a magazine, she'd need to find an internship at a few publications before a magazine would actually hire her. These days, most internships are unpaid.

The fact of the matter is is that just because you go to school and pass your boards, that doesn't mean anyone's going to hire you right away. You need to put your time in and pay your dues before you can start or begin to move up the career ladder.

Best of luck to everybody!!

I know moving is not always an option for many, but Ohio has a nursing shortage and I have personally hired new grads in Dec of last year and will be hiring  some from the May class this year.  give it some thought.

Hi, I am new here. I graduated in 2009 and then moved from Texas to California. I have been looking for a job for almost half a year now. During this period of time, I also attended CE classes, got different certificates. But those didn't seem to help me finding a job either. I am currently voluntering at a pharmacy clinic and a hospice. However, I am not getting any "acute care experience" that most of openings are requiring. I have an option to go to China and work in the hospital to get some experience. However, I don't know how much the working experience in China weights in US. Can anyone give some advise?

Welcome to Nursing Link!

Speaking as an administrator - experience is experience. If it was my facility I would consider experience in China to be fine, as long as it was professional nursing, not aide work.

But the job market for nurses will turn around, it always does. Less than 18 months ago I hired three nurses with no experience.

Yes! Have faith. The job market will turn around...I already feel it has; I just called in for an interview for a job I'd applied for months ago. I already  just got a new job, but still! That's a sign!

JonZ, congradulations to you! Maybe the job market is turning around. However, I still feel glooming in terms of my own situation. I had been appling every single RN residency program I could find, and so far, I only had one interview--I was referred by a friend who is the head of HR department. I am very much enjoying the volunteer work I am doing. But, I also desperately need a job. I need more advise on how to become more competitive in current job market.

CaptainEric, thanks for your input. I will seriously consider this option.  I'm also wondering how many nurse managers think the same way as you do.

I have a friend in UT that just graduated this past year.  She said she must have applied at 150 places!  But, she does now have a job!  Keep up the hard work!  It will pay off!!

Hi everyone! Im moving to California since I just passed the nclex exam. I didnt know the job situation there for nurses was that bleak (upon reading some of the posts here). I see a lot of job openings but not for new grads. What do i do?

I am a little dejected myself. I have been working like a dog for three years to get my RN and now all I get is rejections. Never had this problem in any job and I have been in the labor market for more than 30 years. I am trying to have faith, but it's getting harder and harder!
