Like MrBrown I lost weight - 126 pounds... He has the right idea, but I will NEVER disparage or put down anyone who is having difficulty losing weight. It is VERY difficult, and you have to find the way that works for you - otherwise you will not succeed (or the weight will come right back).

What obese people need is not a critic - but not an enabler either - they need support.  But they will only lose if they do it for themself.

Obesity is a problem that costs us all.  I have big a problem with those that are nonfunctional obese people by choice.  I'm talking the 400, 500, 600lb patient who won't even reach out to his/her bedside table to pour water, or help roll over to get on the bedpan.  I want to know who is feeding them at home?  Who is giving someone that much food, that clearly cannot feed him/herself, wipe his/her own butt, or bathe.

I recently took care of a morbidly obese woman circa 500lb who hadn't bathed in months.  Her legs had friggen cradle cap on from lack of bathing.  It took us 3 days of BID aquaphor, and bedbaths, to get the scales off her body.  Dirt was litterally caked on her skin in huge flakes (layer upon layer). She had several skin infections from open infected sores, and a massive UTI.  WHO WAS FEEDING HER, and buying her all this food?  She obviously couldn't do it herself.

I had a 500 pound patient collapse and die in her kitchen while I was assessing her - she fell and was wedged between a counter and the dishwasher. Pararmedics not available, so we two EMT's gave CPR for 45 minutes awaiting the firefighters to help get her out.

As an RN I could have pronounced her, but I wanted the family to see we did all we could.

It's just amazing to me.   We get one every couple of months.   Bathing them is the absolute worst.  Their butts haven't been wiped in eons.  I want to know what toilet do they sit on at home, that even will hold that much weight?  They can't even walk to the bsc from the bed, so where are they even crapping?  I'm not being funny when I say that, but what goes in must come out?  I tried to delve in it with the last one I had, but either I can't wrap my mind around what they are telling me, or they don't understand the question.

The only thing I can think of, is that they have some serious enablers at home.

The worse thing I have seen with the obese crowd is a >500 lady that had a special swegee tool with a long handle to wipe herself because she could not reach.  It was full of dried clups.  Man, it is still gross to think about it and I have laughed about some pretty gross things in my life, but I still can't laugh about this butt wipe tool.

Sure you can be any type of addict you want to be, sex, food, drugs, nicotine, ETOH, whatever just realize there will always be limited healh resources to take care of you and they will get more and more limited as our aging population grows.  Deal with the results of your food addiction, I will take care of you when admitted  clean your yeast filled skin folds, find the sandwich you lost in your skin folds  (I'm not kidding), clean you up and slim you down as you are tubefed on the vent because you are too large to breathe efficiently on your own.  But I will anticipate you to be discharged back to whatever home you have with all the enabling intact and you probably won't make it back into the hospital next time.  Your rates should be higher for insurance as well as airline seats,  or I know let my bags be free since me and my 56 lb bag weigh 166 pounds, and you weigh 300 plus without your bag.

Its one thing to be "overweight" or maybe even borderline "obese" but to be "morbidly obese" with no true medical condition behind it? Im thinking its more than 1 portion of fish and veggies for dinner. People have a right to be as fat as they want, its not my problem. But dont try to convince me that its not a persons own fault if they are "morbidly obese" without a true medical condition causing it.

The problem comes with the use of BMI as the deciding tool.  It has been proven that BMI is inaccurate, incorrect and should not be used. The correct way of deciding heath risk is waist to hip ration. BMI does not take in bone structure or muscle mass. I would challange anyone of you that are on your fat bashing trip to go and tell our top basket ball, football, baseball players (among many other sports) that they are ALL MORBID OBESE ACCORDING TO THE BMI SCALE. Let me know when you set out to do this. I want to sell tickets.

For the critic of my fish servings... My total meal is 4 OZ. I had a gastric bypass in 2004. If I eat anymore than that I would puke in your lap!

GP goal of weight loss is 1/3 of total wt. So when you start out at 300 lb you max allowed wt loss is 120 lbs. 500 Lb then 190 lb max wt loss. So take that number with BMI and find out you are STILL morbid obese by some bizzare person' s idea of this is how to measure this health risk .... It is very disheartening to people who are of great wt to go thru the surgery and still have this classification. I wrote a paper about obesity discrimination. Everyone of you who have a negative opinion on larger people need to do some reading-rather a lot of reading. You are part of the problem and not part of the solution. The very obese do not seek early medical care because they are treated poorly by all parts of the medical community-including dietitians. If you would like the various reference that I used in my paper-both pro and con I would be happy to share. Stop bashing and start educating yourself. As more and more of the diagnostic limits for many chronic diseases come down, more people will be diagnosed at lighter weights and younger ages. The new recommendation for diagnosing Type 2 DM is now fasting glucose of 100 or greater. There has been a huge jump in the number of people I see as a DM nurse and a younger population. The dx limit was brought down to  hopefully  slow or minimize damage to eyes, nerves, feet and kidneys. Be truthful now.. How many of you are now Type 2 when at your last physical you weren't? Remember people who live in glass houses.... BTW my fasting glucose is 82, BP 126/74  and I weight 228lbs.  What's yours?

How do you know I'm not?

Wow...how do I even respond to someone with such an overgrown ego? I guess the best answer is that God would never judge someone based on their size or most anything else you seem to have an issue with. Also, why do you (and a few others I have seen fanatical posts from on here) feel it necessary to try to subjugate others to your ideas and beliefs? Realize that people have the RIGHT to disagree with you and not be criticized for it or just keep your opinions to yourself if you can't handle that.

That's exactly right, Leena. And before they do they tax the system and usually do less work than those who are fit.

And I should know. I have lost enough weight after getting older, my metabolism slowed but my intake didn't. Bending over to tie my shoes made breathing difficult and I tired more easily. Additionally my BP went up as did my pulse. My BP and weight bothered my doctor who, obviously, wanted me to do something about it. Which required more office visits and taxed the insurance benefit even more.

I worked my butt off in the heat, ate much smaller meals, cut off the sodas and sweets (wish I could give up sweets entirely but a Reeses every other day is inescapable for me usually).

If you're obese, love yourself and your family and coworkers and lose it! It doesn't happen overnight, folks. But do it!

REESES' CUP??? I have lost all respect i had for you... everyone knows SNICKERS RULE.
