Broken Down!

Posted almost 4 years ago This is actually a story from when I was a physical therapy assistant student, back in 1977!: At the end of a very busy day at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, my preceptor and I and another PTA were helping an elderly woman who'd recently had a bilateral hip replacement. Now, this was back in the days when eggcrate mattresses were NOT discarded after every patient use (yes, to think of that now is gross!). Anyway... we were trying to move the mattress up in the bed with our patient on it. The thing was decrepit, and chunks of foam were coming off in our hands when we tried to pull on it. Exasperated, my preceptor finally said "Boy, this old thing's had it!" As the other PTA & I nodded our heads in tired agreement, our patient spoke up with, "Oh, honey, I know, I've just got so old & broken down!" We all doubled over laughing, at the same time trying to explain to our lovely old lady patient that we weren't talking about HER! She took it all quite gracefully... It's one of my better memories of PTA school! Hope I've given you a little smile today |
