Hello,
I am geriatric nurse working with Alzheimer patients. It is very stressful sometimes.Maybe the fact that I work 16 hour shifts at a time has a lot to do with it.
I was wondering how other nurses deal with the stress. I like to use a lot of humor.
Would like to hear what other nurses do to reduse the stress level.

I usually ony work two 16-hour shifts in a row, and always on the weekends.I also work during the week if I am needed. Yesterday I worked another 16 hours.I like my schedule, but sometimes being "locked up" in the unti for so many hours really gets to me!

Hi countrygirl75426, after being a Hospice nurse for several years, a patient that still has life (to whatever extent) doesn't bother me that much. I know that it is stressful, especially if you go home to your own stresses when you are done, be it kids, bills, HUSBAND, or whatever, try taking it one day at a time. Another thing that helps me is to reminisce on the words of the late great Bob Marley: "once a man but twice child" is an old song that we heard growing up as a child. Just keep on being the great nurse that you are ; knowing that it takes a special person to do the job you are doing!

16 hour shifts should be against the law in nursing. I do not care where you work 16 hours of nursing is exhausting and dangerous. More mistakes are made in the 12 and 16 hour shifts than in the traditional 8 hour shifts Humor is an excellent way to deal with stress.
