I highly doubt one man, president or not, is going to change a kids mind once they decide to drop out of school. You can lead a horse to water but.........

I have known plenty of people who know the things they do are not in their best interest, and we, as a family have tried to talk them into making wiser decisions, and making a better life for themselves. But if they aren't ready they wont. Simple as that. I do think it will help some, but not all. And I dont think anyone has come up with the power to brainwash a nation over the tv just yet. Sci-fi!

Angie use your public school education and read the speech.  There is nothing there anyone wouldn't want their kids to hear.  Seriously, this is a large outcry scaring children and making them fearful of a President asking them to work hard for their future and the future of this country.

Any real American would want the best for our nation and an educated populous, kids who stay in school and graduate and go on to become productive members of society, nurturing that expectation is a role of local. state and federal governments.

I hope some of you managed the same outrage when GWB sat and read  "MY PET GOAT" while the US was under attack and Americans were dying.  I will never forget that image, he was like a deer in headlights and didn't know what to do.  He should have excused himself thanked the kids and gone and made decisions.  He is the definition of inept and a truly scary President.

My public school education still prepared me for the NCLEX exam required to have RN on my nametag...........just like any ivy league school could have done.  i chose not to bankrupt my folks in paying for college and used scholastics for the majority of my studies.  Would getting up and scaring those kids make the terrists go away any quicker?  I think he did the right thing and so does thousands of other Americans.  A poll was taken at FT Bragg, wantng to know our opinion if the President did the right thing with his first reaction?   That was October last year, the year Obama got elected................and the poll was one done between all Army posts who had fighting men and women on the front lines..................in October of 08, they 3,300,000 voted yes, the President did the most prudent thing for the moment.  7500 said 'no', something else should have been done.  i was told that people came in from neighboring states to sign that petition.  I wouldnt trust Obama to stick to the script.  He's a liar, has no regard for promises he made during the election.............why believe he'd suddenly grow a brain and remember he published that list of this for his meeting with the kids.  There is no way in hell id allow my kids to sit in the same room with that marxist, socialist liar that lied his way into the whitehouse.  If they said i cant be in there with my kid, so be it.   Im not in that position since m kids are now grown and on thier own.

The President is spreading evil mind rays from the tv at your children?

But yet people will take their children to church every Sunday for some true brainwashing.

Considering that children come out of school not being able to pick out their home state on a map, not being able to do simple math problems, and giving a blank stare when asked about historical figures, maybe Obama needs to step in.  It simply looks to me like Republican conservatives attempting to make Obama into a boogeyman figure to kids because they are fearful of their ancient, doddering party wheezing its last gasps in the next few decades.

Quick, sign your kids up for a Young Republicans meeting!

Among the activities, the government suggests that students from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president." The material includes a suggestion that teachers then collect the letters and redistribute them at a later time "to make students accountable to their goals."

I think that is where the problem lies, asking elementary age students about 'what they can do to help the president?',

Kitty I'll ask again - where was everybody when George HW Bush did the very same thing using almost identical wording? I'll tell you where. Many dyed-in-the-wool Dems did holler. But they left it at that. They did not go on TV, radio and the Web with a coordinated attack. They voiced their concerns about a highly positioned politician using that position to further "their agenda". Old Daddy George was just being a Daddy, just like our President in these times.

At least he cares! And Kitty, you point out in the quote you included that these letters would be given back to the students.

It is shocking to see some of the comments that come through this site. Apparently President Obama lied his way to the white house! I mean there weren't any suspicious happenings in Florida or anything and although he's been in office only 9 months apparently he has lied about all his promises he made during his campaign. He's been called a marxist and a socialist for wanting healthcare for everyone . Is that even fair? Many people don't even know what is in the speech but they're complaining and I feel that is telling. A socialist?  Really? C'mon all the classes you guys took just to get to that RN or BSN and I'm seeing the ability to rationalize replaced by hate and blind fear. Let's say he doesn't succeed......guess what? He wouldn't be the first president to fail, in fact no president has succeeded at every major problem  since.....yea it has never happened. Remember the war on drugs? Really winning that one right? Former presidents sold weapons and trained guys who are now our worst enemies. Everybody praises Reagan and I'm sure he was an ok guy when it came down to it BUT he was far from perfect . People tend to forget that many of the issues we're facing today are from former presidents. I don't think a fully government-run healthcare system is the answer but you know what? Show me how decisions made by some guy on the list of the Forbes top 500 is really what's good for us. Some people act as if this country just now started to break down. The people who are fine with healthcare the way it is are the people who have never got to use it for what it was truly made for. I just saw on the news how people are demonstrating about government spending....where were these people when we were spending trillions of dollars on Iraq?  Money spent in efforts to further another country at that. I hear many people saying things about the president that given the track record of past presidents and his short time in office these are  comments that might  lack rational or even creative thinking. Bush had us hot water within his first term and still got reelected, Obama has done maybe a small fraction of what GW did at this point and I've seen names such as Hitler, comments such as Marxist....all of these are bad people by the way. The man talks about telling kids to go to school and do their homework and people are in an uproar...seriously some people need GPS to locate their priorities and that's just for starters.

I read Obama's book, when he first came on the scene (December of 07).  I came to the conclusion he was a socialist after reading his book.  He said in his book that he 'chose his friends carefully' and among those that he chose to surround himself with were Marxist prof's.  His childhood best friend, and mentor was Frank Marshall Davis, an admitted communist.  Too many things, that shocked me when I read his book, and convinced me that he is a socialist.

Do you want an imam broadcasting the call to prayer over the school intercom?  Most parents wouldn't, and that's why there should be no prayer in school--it is impossible to account for every religious preference, including those who choose not to be religious

For my kids;

I had to sign a consent for health class.  I had to sign a consent giving permission to publish their photo in the yearbook, newspaper, and possibly the tv news.  I have to sign a consent each and every time my kids go on a field trip.  I had to sign a consent for my kids to join marching band.

I could easily sign another consent if they wanted to have a 'prayer' in school.  Honestly, as long as they aren't preaching, I wouldn't care if it was a priest, a rabbi, or muslim saying a simple prayer. As long as everyone has equal time.  I think it instills character and respect for other cultures.

What I do find interesting is that some school systems accomodate Muslims because 'special arrangements' must be made for their call to prayer, but not Christians.  Something is wrong with that.

http://educationalissues.suite101.com/article.cfm/muslim_prayer_in_public_schools

From my own perspective, it is hard for me to disagree with you, but we are probably both Christians.

Jews, Muslims, atheists, and members of other religious faiths probably have a different point of view.

It does not hurt kids not to have prayer in school.  Kids can get all the religious exposure they need in Sunday school.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090907/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_obama_school_speech_text  copy of his speech.  Don't understand why this is causing such a fervor.  Similar speeches were made by  Reagan and Bush, so is it because Obama is not a right wing conservative?

No, it's becuase some ultra conservative Republicans were eagerly grabbing the chance to sling mud at Obama AND score time on TV to boost their exposure.  They thought they were scoring a political coup.  They didn't realize the speech was not political, or they didn't think people would find out it was non-political.

It's much ado about nothing, to quote the Bard.

I think the point RNProgressive is trying to make is that when Bush had his moment to stand in glory and present himself as a decisive leader, he failed to do so.

You can't trust a poll done on the military on explosive political issues.  These people know their leadership can make life miserable for them if they don't respond the right way.

And actually, Obama has kept or is in the process of keeping, his promises.  He has broken a few, but they are a handful to the ones he's kept, according to PolitiFact.com http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/

You know its a sad day that we have a discussion about the President addressing our children about schools. Now we really see that racisim is still alive and going strong. People are so dumb these days. First of all I am for President Obama addressing my child about staying in school. As a parent, we need someone other than ourselves to show and tell our children how important it is to get an educattion. Thats the one thing noone can take away from you. No one cried when the presidents before him and their wives addressed the schools, and they weren't half as intellegent as the President today. Anybody can stand up and wave at children, tell them everything is going to be alright. But, look out a black man is telling our children to stay in school. What's so funny is that he is bi-racial and all people can see is the darkness of the skin. God forbid these little black children catch on and actually do it. We might have an uprising of "upitty niggers". Ha Ha Ha . Thats just to real for some folks. Its about time a President took a stand for what was right and not for those who are padding his pockets. Healthcare needs to be fixed and He's doing just that. America is so greedy. Its sad that people regardless of race has to die or suffer because their inability to pay. Healthcare should be for everyone not just the rich. Doctors took an oath to provide medical attention to everyone regardless of their ability or inability to pay. Unless they changed the oath when I wasn't looking...................Guess what America, this country started to fall apart when the first Bush took office. Our debt was almost null and void when Clinton was President and here we go again another Bush and the bottom fall out. Now Obama has to be stuck with this mess that the president, no one voted for, had to cheat to get in office, has made. Yes!!! I said cheat to get in office, because he clearly did not win that electiion. Now all these Obama haters were cool with that.  To them I say keep hating, because Obama needs all the haters he can get.  And for those of you that are so ignorant to the fact. This is Gods doing. Nothing, I mean nothing can happen unless God allows it!!!!! I tell you now America better repent before God. All this hatred in your hearts! Stupid people if you don't know by now, let me inform you. Obama is the raft of God. You better get your bibles and read, get on your knees and pray that God does not destroy this land. I know who I voted for and I know who I stand with. His name is Jesus. Do you know where you stand? Get your minds right! Get your minds right!!!!

Aiesha and Eric get a room!  Careful all that love going on might just make you a liberal!

Aiesha says:

Evidently I can't be American and still disagree with the liberal views of our current leadership.  Have you previewed the President's speech?  Do you know what it contains? If so, wonderful, but I have not been given that opportunity, and I cannot be sure that Obama is not going to use this as an opening for his liberal agenda.  I am the parent of my children, and it is my responsibility to make sure they are exposed or not exposed to what I choose.  That is MY RIGHT as a parent.  The last I knew, Obama had not taken that away from me yet.

Furthermore, I find your racist overtones quite amusing.  This has nothing to do with the fact that Obama is BI-RACIAL (not  black), don't believe that?  Simply ask my BLACK husband or my BI-RACIAL children if I have those concerns.  Seems to me you are far more focused on his color than I am. I have never once mentioned his race being an issue for me in any forum I have posted in.  Pulling the race card is rather outdated, don't you think?  If that's the best defense you have against someone not agreeing with Obamas liberal views then you have much work to do.

Yes I know about your personal choices in relationships and that is fine.  Why then are you threatened by a successful thoughtful mixed race American urging children to stay in school and make a future for themselves?  He, of all politicians, should be a strong example of all you can now achieve in America for your children, regardless of his politics.  What has he done in his policies to hurt you or your family?  Remember the majority of the first stimulus was Bush and the wars were Bush ...

I suggested racism as the cause of the knee jerk response for the vitriol spewed immediately upon hearing the president wanted to address school kids.  You didn't even wait for the transcript.  The transcript is out, it is wonderful and lays down the challange to our youth to face the challanges ahead and never give up no matter what your circumstances.  It is much what any good parent would say to their child.  Oh yeah, as a nurse, I love the part about washing your hands!

Lastly, we had eight long years of Jesus and biblical quotes in speech after speech poured down our throats and our children's throats from Bush.  He evoked the Christian God numerous times in policy speeches and on the international stage.  This is a pluralistic society with all religions represented-- as president Bush should have recognized that and not used words like crusade and verses from the Bible in his speeches.  His speech made us less safe around the world as other religions see us as intolerant and out to destroy them

By the way anyone can pray anywhere they want just not in an organized manner out loud in public schools.  If God is in your heart he knows what you ask or thank him for without a verbal utterance.  You don't seem to give God enough credit.  Public prayer is about conversion and recruiting for Evangelical Christianity do that on your own time with my blessing not in public schools.

Good idea on the Spanish maybe telemundo can broadcast it too in translation or there can be a running translation on the bottom of the screen with Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese etc for the different languages in our schools!  I'll suggest it on the White House website.

I am NOT threatened by anyone of mixed race, American or not.  I am raising beautiful mixed race children who are intelligent, confident, and proud of who they are because that is what I instill in them.

Transcript or no transcript, I cannot be sure this is the script that he will be sticking to, and as Eric explained earlier, I do not want my children pledging their allegiance to any man regardless of his color.  Furthermore, I have no respect for our current leadership, and if I choose to not have him address my children that is my right as their parent.  I actually don't have to have a reason for not wanting him to address my children.  That's one of the beautiful things about being an American.

Lastly, my name is spelled AISHA.

Sorry about the name misspelling.  You are correct you don't have to have a reason to refuse to allow your children to listen to a speech from the president of their country.  I hope when they ask you why they didn't go to school or listen to the speech in school you at least have an answer for them that is not, "Because I said so."  A reasoned rational answer that does not include socialist etc or talking points would be best.

What else don't you let them watch? How sheltered are they?

Wrong again!   In a well functioning society we are all invested in how the next generation turns out.  How prepared are they educationally, emotionally, and physically to carry on the innovations and successes of our nation.  Do we protect their environments, food supply etc so they grow up healthy, do they have adequate health care. are they educated.  All fundtions of society. So you should appreciate my concern for your children, I know you are concerned about mine.

Interesting quote by Mother Theresa you use as your tag line:

"It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish" ~Mother Theresa~

I think this pertains to the US over on the Healthcare debate.  Don't you?  Since everyone feels we should not raise taxes or help the poor who cannot pay for care, those who have lost a job and their benefits the same time their kid breaks a leg or gets leukemia isn't this deciding a child must die so you may live as you wish? So the selfish Americans can have another TV, another new car, more stuff?   I'm happy to see you are for health care for all Aisha, I know, I know no abortions but Birth control and preventative care is ok Right?

Interestingly enough, but not surprising, is that Laura Bush and many GOP leaders who read the speech Obama was to give these schoolkids approved of it. It's sad that the Internet has been turned into a tool that a fool can use for ill gain. The protest over this speech began the day it was announced Obama would make it.

That was before anybody even knew what would be contained in it. Now if that isn't BS politics at its lowest I don't know what is.
