So I work in a nursing home and unlike a hospitals nothing is ever organized!! There are never any people and sad to say but most PCA's or STNA's dont give a damn about the elderly. I have been seeing my nurses not report falls, take accurate vital signs, meds not being passes, meds being passed but not making sure the dementia patients are taking it. My D. O. N. ( disrector of Nursing) overlooks everything that is being done and will never work if we are under staff. Does no one care for the elderly? Does no one care about someone's mother or grandma, great aunts, or uncles? I have seen my residents sit in lobby's for hours waiting on their children to come visit and they never show does anyone care but me ?

Sadly, many nursing homes are poorly run.

Document what you can.  You can always file a complaint with the state department of health and human services, or whoever regulates nursing homes in your state.

I did that once.  Inspectors came in and shut the place down, forced the owner to sell it.

I have worked in nursing homes several times, and I saw residents who sat and waited for family, just like you have.  It was sad that we were more like family to them than the kids that never came.            And I was always frustrated at the poor care from various levels of employees.........  who all must have talked about how much they cared , and how much they wanted to help these people, when they were trying to get the job.

If you are seeing things that should be reported, and if your DON can't or won't,   then maybe you should point them out.                        Sometimes just having the DON aware that YOU are aware that rules,   policies and procedures  are not being followed,   and MAYBE should be reported,   is enough to get things changed.            But be very sure,    and have proof of the things that are wrong.   You don't want to make accusations and then find out that you were mistaken.           And, if you do follow through, you will need to be ready to have people angry at you,   and be ready to possibly get fired.           Not that these things will or should happen,   but most people will deny that they have done anything wrong and will want to know who is saying they did.        Legally, they should not be able to fire you for calling attention to policies and procedures not being followed, but if the facility is as poorly run as you say, they may try.         You might have to allow for some type of savings to hold you over incase they tried to fire / lay you off  , and  take your complaints to the state.

And, if you are right, and you have proof, and they close that facility, you should have some plan for where you will work next.
