Who is your favorite nursing theorists and why? How do you apply any of the principles you particularly care for from that theorist? Do you use principles from more than one theorist? How do you apply what you have learned from your Growth and Development classes?

P. Benner is mine. Novice to Expert is how I grew up in nursing and the clinical ladder I climbed was based on this theory. The ladder is way different where I am now and I don't like it even though I have been recently promoted. Lots of politics and "behind the scenes activity". Our manager is weak and I don't think she really knows how difficult it is to work in our unit...even tho she says she does. She is advised by the "leadersdhip group" comprised of nurses that have made it to the top and gained a very nice schedule and lots of Admin time yet no one really knows what they do. To give her credit, we recently were surveyed about the role of these leadership people - don't know results yet.
Back to Benner. I LOVE to write clinical stories that support the nurse in whatever level they are at. I would love to encourage this in the staff. Recently, our unit newsletter contained a lot of kinda short stories from bedside nurses. I want to sponser some sort of writing contest. I think this would help nurses get their stories told. Anyway, I trudge on, working with the system I have, hoping to change it one day.

I have been thinking of Benner often as I am now a novice again in my role of Nurse Practitioner. I love your idea of having nurses getting their stories on paper. I am amazed at how often I use the information from my Growth and Development class.
