So what do you see as being proper in the IV access world?  How much blood, how many holes, how much of a butcher  will you be before you hand it over to someone else or a different method?  I do not miss to many, but on the second try for IV or blood I hand it over after an apology to the poor patient most to the time.

Cheers - Tim, R.N.

Three - then I would call someone.

Just one of the reasons I was so happy to get into management! I loved interacting with patients, but was not very good at phlebotomy.

Depends on how many people are there that can actually access a vein and how many decent sites the patient has. Regardless, 3 is my max and then they get my apologies and Sevo's number.

i used to work in infusion center wow talk about bad chemo riddled veins !! i was taught by the pro she said use a 1/2 penrose drain for the tourney and then look what pops up remove the tourney then pic the site use a hot pack on it for 5 min and whala i think  i've missed 2 times in the whole time i worked there. if i don't see anything when i apply the tourney i will usually get someone else before doing any scavenging unless of course as mr brown pointed out depends on who is working and how many options i have.

I am use to working in peds, so parents get frustrated and baby gets more and more upset. 2 is my limit, unless baby is very lethargic, ie not much fight or crying,  and parents are not in the room.

As a general rule, 2 sticks and I'm done.  If I give it a 3rd try, there are extenuating circumstances, like there's no one else available and I really need the line.

Fortunately for me, I'm really good at IV starts and drawing blood; I usually get it on the first try even with kids.

I usually make a deal with kids--they are allowed to kick and scream as long as they don't move the arm I am working on.  You'd be amazed how often it works.  The parents are in the room holding the other hand for comfort.  Sometimes I need a 2nd stick with kids if they reeeaaalyy dehydrated, but I'm usually more motivated to get it on one.

I usually only stick twice, unless.......

1. I'm on nightshift.  (because, I'm one of the better IV starters, on days we have an in house IV team)

2. It's a critical situation, and it's anything goes.

You should never poke and poke, because you actually might ruin a vein that someone better than you could have gotten.

My extensive military knowledge is not limited to just being in line at the commissary, I also have extensive military knowledge of the 'Class Six'.

That's excatly right Kitty. I say the same thing. I'l tell pt's that I only "stick" twice, and then I get someone else just in case there's a good vein I may not be seeing. We have Special procedures and they have an ultrasond device that usually helps get the IV. If not, can you say PICC line?

If I dont get em the first time, I feel like I jinxed myself!   I hate it when that happens.  I dont  do more than 2 attempts.  In home health you got no one to come up and try, it would end up being an extra nurse visit which would suck.   Im one of the better vampires on our team but one of my favorite  is PICC things is PICC line.

We only have one heart, take care of it!
