Posted almost 4 years ago Hi all I am a 40 yr. old male and am considering going into nursing is it too late in life? Is it tougher to be hired as a male nurse? I feel I would be very good at and want to pursue this but I have had friends say I am nuts. I stumbled upon this site so I figured I would ask the people who really know. Thanks for any advice you can give |

| Posted almost 4 years ago Go for it, I'm in my 40s made the change, and it is one of the better choices I've made. As for the males part, they love us, and it seems like we get promoted a bit quicker in some areas. Just stay away from the negative clicks. If you already have your basics done in college or better yet a B degree of some sort you could put RN on in 3 or 4 semesters. There are a great deal of different program choices out there. Good luck
Cheers - Tim, R.N. |

| Posted almost 4 years ago Heck no it's not too late. Go for it. And most women would rather work with a man and openly admit it. |

Oh, I don't know about that... Imagine the look on a lot of these women's faces if they walked in and found they had to work with me....I would be laughing so hard I would wet myself. |

I think it would be easier to be hired as a male...You traditionally use fewer sick days... you wont quit when your husband makes enough for you to stay home.. you will not go on maternity leave...... and best of all....it seems you will get paid more than a female... at least that is what I have read on this site.
The DOWNSIDE is going to NUSING SCHOOL at 40.. I was 38 when I went back fro a BSN and 40 when I went to anesthesia school...nursing school was one of the most painful experiences of my life... including infantry school and jump school.... do you have ANY idea how annoying a large group of 19 and 20 year old girls are?? Young girls are cute for one reason and one reason alone.. so we don't kill them.
I teach anesthesia graq students... and if ANY grad student pulled the crap I saw pulled by undergrads.. they would be out the door in a heartbeat. |

| Posted over 3 years ago It pains me to say - for once I agree completely with SEVO - (except the "cute" comment - my friends would kill me) I was 40 when I started nursing school... HORRIBLE! The instructors treated us like we were 14 year old girls - and most of the students acted like it... The language used by the 19 year old girls was filthier than I ever heard in the military. Law school was far easier - all I had to do was think and write well, and we were treated like adults. Nursing school was like a tour on a slave ship. BUT it was worth it... Time passed quickly, and nursing school was done. Two of us were 40 year-old Vietnam vets - we graduated numbers one and two in the class. The instructors despised us, because we stood up for our rights. Once you graduate, your nursing career is whatever you want to make it! Males do just fine getting hired, and I never found any prejudice at all against us guys. Good luck! |

Sevo, if I found myself working with you, my issue woud not be you, it would be the shock and terror of being in the OR. Not my home, I'm afraid. |

| Posted over 3 years ago to the OP: many of my students are in their 40's. I currently have several male students who are in their late 30's/early 40's. It is not at all unusual. |
