Okay, I recently failed my 2nd attempt at the NCLEX. Not because I do not know my stuff but because of test anxiety. So, I was hoping we could get a thread going with different tips on nursing. For example, how to do math problems (drop factors, heparin doses, etc), any and all information that you think would be helpful to a future NCLEX tester. No matter how many times that person has taken it, to me, doesn't matter. it is what is in their heart and what they know they want to do with their life. I don't want to see good people who are trying to become nurses be afraid to take this test.

Please offer any tips, knowlege, advice that you may have that has worked for you or others.

Thanks in advance!!

Erin

If you are having a problem with test anxiety, then you need to get tested and find out exactly what the problem is, so you can get treatment for it.

Have you done a review course?  You should have a letter telling you your weak areas from the testing center.  That is a place to start on review.

Practicing NCLEX questions is a good place to start.  Do 10 a day in 15 minutes.  Then drop it to 14 minutes when you're getting 100%, then 13 minutes and so on.

Focus on your critical thinking skills. You talk about math; math is black and white.  NCLEX is not black and white, it is shades of grey.

You can get every knowledge comprehension question right and still fail.  NCLEX doesn't care if you know your content.  It cares if you know what to do to care for patients.

I know what I need to do to get over the test anxiety. I have taken the Kaplan course and done about 10 review books. I will get it, eventually lol.

I really just wanted to start this thread because there are so many nursing students out there who would love the extra information whether they are fresh out of school or a few years out.

Thanks to all :)

Hello

I see you stated that you took the kaplan course.  They suppose to gurarantee you materials to help you pass the test.  If not they suppose  to refund you the money back.  You may want to check into that.  Also just take your time and study from one book and not many others.  It will be better to read from the one you understand the most.  I hope this information is helpful to you!

Yes, I did say I took Kaplan but they only offer the refund for new graduates. This was my second attempt and I have been out of nursing school for 2 years. Thanks for the post though. :)

this is a small portion of a response i gave in this forum under another topic....

what you need to keep in mind is that the nclex test your ability to answer the questions with the information they give you. here is where the strategies come in. the strategies teach you how to go about answering different types of questions - even the questions where the you don't know much about the topic. do as much questions as you possibly can. (by the time i passed my nlcex i probably went through 5,000 questions.)  doing that many questions  enforces the strategies you've learned and builds up your endurance and you also get to learn a lot of content in little tid-bits. if you have test anxiety, work on getting rid of it or at least minimizing it.  when you go for the nclex, panicking is no good. the number of questions that you recieve on the nlcex is NO INDICATOR of whether you pass or you fail. you can get 75, 186 or all 265 questions pass or fail. DO NOT go into the nclex wanting a specific amount of questions. ANTICIPATE ALL 265 QUESTIONS!  if you go in with the mind set of having the minimum of questions (e.g. 75 questions) and the computer gives you questions past that, you are going to start worrying and get stressed out and that is in NO WAY good. answer each question as if it were your last.

My suggestion is to find a testing booklet.  And judt test test test tes yourself until your blue in the face.  I was a certified nursing assistant for a long time but now I got my RN license yesterday!! Awwww ya.  Keep up the hard work you will conquer!

I know it's been a few months since this intial post. I graduated in May of this year and last week was my first attempt at the NCLEX but I did not pass. I also did the Kaplan review course which I found some strategies to be helpful but maybe I need more review on certain contents. Review books have been helpful also but I go back to the review sections and have to find other places for practice questions once I write in these books. As for test anxiety, I feel I am ok in that area. I took two months to study and practiced plenty of questions. It took gradual increase in practicing questions, like starting with 1 hour,  then up to 5 hours. I hear the Hurst review is also helpful although I have not looked into that yet. I plan to take the NCLEX again soon so I'm back to reviewing and do what I can.

I hope your testing goes/went well.

It is so nice to see this thread still exists.

I haven't taken my 3rd attempt at the NCLEX yet as this has been a very difficult year. My father had  brain bleed in January and I had to help him get back on his feet while he lived with me for 6 months and I have just moved to another residence so now that it has all calmed down some, I am starting to study again. I will tell you that I bought the Hurst Review book and it is amazing!! It is so much easier to read than most of the books and I swear every page something hits me like a ton of bricks and I say to myself "Oh yeah, that's what they mean by that" or "Now it makes sense!". She doesn't teach you nursing all over again but she does tell you what you need to concentrate on and gives you "Marlenes Tips" and they are great.

So, I definitely recommend the book to anyone looking to pass the Nclex for their first time or their 10th.

Happy Studying/Testing and Good Luck!!!

Hi All!  I just found out I failed the Nclex for my second time.  I was devastated the first time and am disappointed this time.  I am an older student who at age 54 decided to go back to school for nursing.  I graduated in May and can't get seem to overcome this step.  I will try again but not until I am sure I know the material.   I am not working now and have no working experience in the nursing field and am stuck.  I need a job but will probably have to settle for Wallymart or something.:(   I really want to work with the elderly in some capacity. Hope to receive some tips.  My family is 100% behind me on this.

I graduated last year from the LPN program and have failed the nclex twice, I hope to take it again. Sometimes I just want to give up and not take it again for fear of failing yet again. But then I think I spent two years and I did graduate its just a test keeping me from becoming  a nurse. I want so bad to be a nurse, I keep studying alot. But seeing other students graduate at work  and passing there boards on the first try makes me a little jealous of them.  I will keep taking the test until I pass it. Its good to hear about other people having trouble just like I am.

We all have to remember that if we made it through nursing school, can and willl pass the Nclex!! It is something I have to drill into my head on a daily basis!! It is extremely hard to see my nursing classmates walk around with their badges with the letters RN next to their name but I have to convince myself as well as try to stay positive and believe that I will become a RN!! You need to do the same!!

My suggestion is to try Saunders NCLEX prep book and CD-ROM. It really helped me. I also took Kaplan and failed my first time around. I had a total of 205 questions. I found that the CD-ROM that came with Saunders have a lot of very hard questions and it really helps to read the rationales. Another thing is to try meditation to relax and decrease your anxiety level. I re-took my NCLEX-RN and passed with only 75 quesions. I personally believe that by studying from Saunders, it has really prepared me, although i did study 4 hours every morning up to the day of my exam. Best of all luck to you.

I just wanted to say I am so glad to have stumbled on this site.  I feel better knowing there are people like me who are trying to pass the Nclex.  I had to find a part time job and am working at Walmart but I long to be in a nursing facility  someday.  I am back to studying after my second failed attempt a few weeks ago.  I am reviewing Saunders book but am thinking of getting Hurst Review book as a new approach.  I too get doubts about being a nurse but I am trying to wipe those out of my mind.  I am going to put up Post It Notes in the house saying I will pass the Nclex.  Thanks to all for sharing your thoughts.

Hi Erincas, I dont know how long ago you wrote about this.  But hopefully you passed your nclex, that test can really be tough, as it should be.  Test anxiety affects a lot of people.  I think the best possible thing that i have found to help is taking practice tests.  I have my cna training students and my nursing students take practice test after practice test.  I actually found a lot of books for practice at barnes and nobles and borders books.  Hopefully that helps, and good luck.  You will love nursing!
