Hey guys, i haven't been on here in quite sometime.

I'm currently freaking out and not sure if nursing is the right thing for me anymore? i mean, i can see myself in pediatrics, loving my job, but I'm currently taking a gen chem, organic chem, AND biological chem ALL tied into one course, and i've never taken chem before. The teacher is horrible, and even my friends in the class that have taken AP Chem in High School are lost...

I feel so lost and helpless. Any words of encouragement or help to keep me motivated to continue with this major?

Thanks a lot guys!

Stick with it.  It is not all going to be easy as you can see and there will be instructors that just don't have it as well.  That will be behind you one day and you will be glad you stuck it out.

Cheers - Tim, R.N.

Are you currently in a nursing program or is this to satisfy pre-reqs?  If you're in a nursing program and have to take everything in order, that can be hard ----- you just have to do the best you can to get through it.  If, however, this is a pre-req, maybe you would benefit from a more entry-level course first.

Some courses are just extremely difficult - especially if the teacher is less than wonderful - and I find study groups to be awesome.  Although, you have to choose your study partners wisely......some are way to social and are more of a distraction than a help.

Are you taking the class at a JC or State?  I have heard that JC professors go easier on the students than State professors.  Smaller class sizes allow more time for questions.  All of my classes have been at the JC level so far (although I've changed majors a couple of times) so I can't speak for State professors.  This is just something I've been told by several classmates who were going to State and the JC.  They opted to take the course at the JC because they knew it would be easier to pass for multiple reasons.

Check out www.ratemyprofessor.com if you haven't done so already.  This may help you identify better professors in the future.

Best of luck to you and don't give up on your dream because of 1 class.

yeah it all just seems so hard and pointless.

it's at a state college, i go to sac state, and i do know about ratemyprofessor.com, unfortunately she's the only one who teaches this course. I'm just afraid i'm going to fail the class and then there goes my GPA and there goes the nursing program... i should try to take some of my pre reqs and the JC if it's a little easier, annd cheaper!

Thanks for your input, i don't want to give up on my dream, but at the same time i'm just hoping i'm not getting myself into something totally different than what i thought it was going to be like, you know?

Oh and i'm just starting my pre reqs and already having doubts =/ i'm already majoring in child development, because i want to go into pediatrics and i looove kids.

it just sucks right now =[

Sweet honk, Sevo. I'm sitting here dealing with that very line! And these kids want to know why us old goats think we know so much. Like we dropped onto earth at 50.

I have to admit I do not care what young people think of me... there are very few, if any thing they can bring up that I cannot say... been there... done that... bought the T shirt.

They think we were born last night. And of course they just know the  world has changed since we were young. Maybe - but people haven't.

What'd i do to get these kinds of responses?

My heart is into helping kids, and you guys are mocking me for that? Way to be grown up and mature i guess.

YES Im mocking you.... you seem to think nursing is all about FEELINGS and THAT attitude is what is wrong with nurisng in general. I am sorry the SCIENCES are hard for you to understand.. But I have been a nurse longer than YOU have been consuming oxygen and SCIENCE is what nursing SHOULD be about. I am a CRNA..... you might want to google that.... and have been an LTC LPN.. ADN and BSN.. so again, I am a REAL nurse.. and attitudes like  yours annoy the hell out of me.

Nursing is part science and part art. Don't get past the science to get into practice and forget the art. The touchy feely stuff won't get you a license or a job. Or any respect as you can see.

Withdraw passing and take one of these courses at  time.

I don't seem to think that nursing is just about caring for others, although in my opinion, the best nurses are the ones that actually care about their patients, you seem not to be one of those types of people, which is odd that you're a nurse. I don't know what you're so bitter about, but all I was asking was for some words of advice or encouragement, and i got you complaining about young people?

I am good at science thank you, i'm just taking a crazy class that i didn't think would be so intense.

Obviously nursing is an art and a science, nursing is a lot of things, but being a bitter person doesn't seem to be one of them in my eyes. I'm not looking for a career that i'm not passionate for, I'm looking to fulfill my passion through nursing, and I know I can do it.

Thanks for the words of critisism, it was very mature of you.

There are optimist and there are pessimists. I tend to think of myself as a realist. After 30+ years of watching prospective nurses come down the road I have probably heard and seen it all. So have many others on this site.

Sorry I didn't mean to rain on your parade. I took it when you said even advanced students were lost in the class that you were including yourself in that group. I see now that you are just worried about everybody else and that you are passing easily.
