Anyone have any patience to spare?  I'm still working on pre-reqs before I can apply to nursing school and it feels like it's quite a ways off.  Some days I realize how quickly it will pass and I will be nursing before I know it.

But some days, like today, people at work keep expecting things and I just don't give a sh** about their problems.  It makes the desire to leave this field stronger.

I know it will pass - just needing to vent.

I would love to hear about the sh** jobs you all did while you were waiting to become a nurse.  Misery loves company and reading that you put up with X years of secretarial or restaurant or anything OTHER than your dream job while working towards your goal would really help right about now.    Especially if you're now on the other side and can look back at those times.

Well I did retail for 8 years from high school thru nursing school. It wasn't terribly aweful, of course I always try to make the best out of everything.

Working for Petco could be very enjoyable at times, caring for animals and meeting everyone's pets...fun for the most part.

However the customers could be upset about prices (they do charge a lot) and expect you to bend over backwards for them, which you weren't even in the authority level to. I once had a man throw a basket of cans at me when he got upset about something, that was pretty bad. Some of the time people would talk real close to you, and it was usually the ones that had bad breath.

There would be complaints about the wait in line for help, or assistance with a certain department. I tried to brush everything off so that it wouldn't wear me down and I could focus on school.

yes any cashier job sucked, if the customer was a jerk than you were stuck listening to their complaints. plus the low pay didnt help. please note that nursing is becoming more geared toward customer satisfaction. hospitals get reimbersed from medicare based partly on patient satisfaction scores, and now more than ever management is on us like crazy to keep up the scores. 1 pissed off patient or their family member will bring your scores down. also they are surveying pts when they are inpatient and when they go home. so for now its here to stay and its up to the nurse to make the pts happy, mostly because we are stuck at the bedside. so just to warn you there are major pressures coming from managment and the pts. with that said nursing is awsome and worth it.
