nursing LOTTERY?!

Posted over 5 years ago I went to my school in Chicago to start getting my registration in order and to sign up for prerequisite classes, but was shocked to find out that students are accepted into the Nursing Program by the results of a RANDOM LOTTERY!!! I was shocked... I asked my advisor if academic merit had any relevance at all, and he said that no, that it was an attempt to "level the playing field." I could understand if there was an affirmative action policy based on race, gender, or income, but to choose via a lottery just seems completely ridiculous and shows a lack of forward thinking on the CCC's part. Does anyone have another opinion, or any advice for what I can/should do? Has anyone else in Illinois dealt with the same thing? I don't know what I will do if I am not accepted. |

Posted over 5 years ago that's how my school does it too - you will just wait until the next selection like the rest of the pack that did not get selected, and hope that most of them get frustrated and decide to do something else. My advisor told me to apply to all the nursing schools in the area, that "maybe you will get lucky". the "level the playing field" I actually can sort of understand...have you ever known someone that was really really smart at memorizing facts/learning things out of books but when it came to actually applying it in real life they were hopeless? or whose people skills were horrible? A lot of really excellent nurses out there did not get the highest grades in prereq's or even nursing classes, but they have a way with people and a caring attitude that some people just cannot be taught...no reflection on them, they are just differently talented...

Posted over 5 years ago It's unfortunate, but the wait lists have gotten so long. One tech school in my area actually abolished their wait list because it had gotten so long, and restarted it. In that case, the race goes to the swiftest. Think about the people who were almost to the top of the list.

Posted over 5 years ago random lottery for nursing school students is just crazy! There was a article on this site just the other day about this very thing. The article said one girl went thru 6 lotteries before she got in. There has to be a better way!

Posted over 5 years ago Pay nurse educators more so more will want to teach so classes can be bigger...Stop "eating our own", make sure the ones who do get through it want to stay...but i suspect if places weren't so short of nurses and current nurses weren't so overworked, that might go away somewhat...

Posted over 5 years ago DSU accepts on basis of merit. They have a board that all applicants go through after having done the entrance test, reference letters, and other basics. A lottery just negates the whole application process, in my opinion. Any fool can join a lottery, but would you want them taking care of you?
