Posted about 1 month ago Alrighty, so I'm a new grad that's been seriously contemplating enlistment into the armed forces. At first I thought the Navy would give me great experience to begin my new career. Then I was told by a fellow nurse that the air force would be better. I'm fairly uneducated in this choice I am trying to make so more help the better. What's NL's thoughts on this career move? Please let me know... -Angela--'--,--{@ |

| Posted about 1 month ago I am a firm believer in the Airforce..but you may want to wait a bit...and see what is going on with the war...any experience you get on the outside..adds to your worth to the force...and that will mean monitarily and how fast you advance in rank... And choose three places that you would want to go...and make sure that you would like any of the three....

| Posted about 1 month ago the best thing about the military in my humble opin is their retirement package. i know plenty or nurses who get retirement from the military and still work . so getting 2 paychecks would def be nice ! you will be surprised how fast 20yrs goes by! better yet women in the military are treated better than ever before!! i say go for it!! can't say which branch is the better however when i was looking into it air force seemed to have the better stuff avail . One thing to consider for sure is the war but hey nothing like a little shelling to spice up your day! |

| Posted about 1 month ago I spent four years active duty in the Navy - including one year assigned to the Air Force... Then 14 years in the Army Reserve and Guard. If I was starting out I would choose Air Force or Army for my active duty - they live a lot better (especially Air Force). If you are concerned about a war - don't enlist at all! If you go in, you must be ready to accept being put into life-threatening circumstances... That's part of your obligation. As a RN officer you will have it a lot better than the enlisted people. Your pay and living quarters will be MUCH better. Consider the reserves - you may or may not be deployed, but at least most of the time you will be at home. And the reserves (including the Guard) have a nice retirement package). Besides, the idea that I'm serving my country in the Guard is the MAIN reason I'm still in (7th CA Regiment). I didn't enlist to get experience, I enlisted to serve America. The experience is a bonus! It's a good deal, but consider everything - then make your decision. Eric, Captain JA |

| Posted about 1 month ago Eric has a point on the reserve units. You would attend OCS and some more training after that. Then 1 weekend a month with your reserve unit. Then 2 weeks a year of summer camp training. But you can, and most assuredly will, be called to active duty. With these 2 stupid "wars" going on you can bet your car you'll be called up but not necessarily to go off overseas. But back to work stateside, once you are a military officer and since you are already a nurse it would be easier to get a job. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Your comments are helpful. I don't mind being called, however if it involves going over seas then it's sketchy with the wars going on. I value my effort and duty so if I do sign, we'll see what happens. I'm hoping to speak with someone from the airforce today so that may answer some questions as well. Thanks everyone and remember, anyone's comments or opinions are welcome, more the better please. Additional -Angela--'--,--{@ |

| Posted about 1 month ago Right now, the Army Reserve is offering some really good deals. They have something called STRAP, you get $1900 a month while you further your education. I have a friend who is going for first his BSN, then a Masters degree. For every 6 months you attend school, you owe the Army a year of Reserve time. You cannot be deployed while attending school, but after completion deployment is a possiblity. BTW, you wouldn't be enlisting, if you are going in as an RN you would be an officer, and therefore be commisioned. Do not see a regular recruiter, you must see a health care recruiter who specializes in the medical field (nurses and docs). I personally liked the Navy (but I wasn't a nurse, I was enlisted). My husband loves the Army reserve, and I have friends that liked the Air Force. I think it all depends on what your preference is. My extensive military knowledge is not limited to just being in line at the commissary, I also have extensive military knowledge of the 'Class Six'. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I'm trying to get in touch with some nurse recruiters (from Navy & Air force) so they can possibly answer specific questions. Mean while I did turn in some apps to the local hospital here in San Diego, only because my BF is kinda against the idea of me becoming commisioned in the military. I am hoping this idea might appeal to him more- after the holidays, but it's my choice, and once I know enought to possibly decide for myself I will. Again, thanks all! -Angela--'--,--{@ |
