As a late bloomer hoping to become a nurse in 2-4 years. I was wondering how difficult has it been for late bloomers to find jobs.  Prior to the economic downturn, as well as now.

There's always a chance for anyone with a license. I'll tell you this as an older guy myself, nursing can and will wear you out. Choose your requested area carefully. Med/Surg offers the best chance at experience and getting a job and the absolute best chance at wearing your feet/legs out.

OR - think again. After 30 years as a RN I gave up on OR and ER as my body simply couldn't take it anymore. Well it could but I just didn't like the pain and stiffness. Peds is OK as most of the patients are light and most can move pretty much on their own compared to older adults who are infirm.

Nursing Homes are always looking. Not very exciting but for those who feel that is their calling it is great. After all the patients are people who accidentally got old.
