I was D/C ing my first foley in clinical. I was standing their with my instructor and the man that i was d/cing starts to bust my butt. He says to me as i grabbed his penis and the cath, this was the first time in a longtime that anyone has grabbed him that way and it felt sooooo good!!!!! So as i am trying to take this mans foley out and begin to remove it the man starts to make all sorts of noises as if he was really enjoying the whole scenario.,... So as i am about 4 shades of red and trying to maintain my composer my instructor bursts out laughing so hard and says that this is the funniest thing she has ever heard........ So all in all it was embarrassing and funny at the same time.... I was so red.......

Myself and another nurse were recently bathing a patient with mild dementia. We were sponging him in bed and he was complaining, no matter how gentle we were. When we got to his "private parts" his tune changed, he started saying 'yes yes yes' and when we moved away from that area he says 'more more'.... we had to laugh as it was quite funny.... the other nurse I was with told him we had finished and he got quite upset... wow, talk about crazy!

How do you keep your composer when you are in situations such as these? I know that you are supposed to keep some level of professionalism but when a man or woman is making such obscene gestures and remarks that are stated in a funny manner and not serious how do you put aside the humor in it>>> I found it so hard to hide the embarrassment with this situation..... Ljr do you have any advice should this every arise again????? Would much appreciate it.

You will have many more embarassing situations and they will not become any easier as time goes on. I always try to act in a professional manner and not let the pt. see I am uncomfortable. Talking to the patient while you are preforming a task will take their mind and yours off what is going on. Some male patients can be crude. I try to ignore them. If they won't stop, I'll jokingly say something like "that's about enough of that" or I'm going to tell your wife/mother" joking helps in alot of situations, but always remain professional. Treat the patient the same way you would want someone to treat your Dad or Grandpa or brother. Always be respectful and courteous to your patients.

Charlita,
Thank you for the advice, as i never really thought of thinking of my male patients that way,,, i think by thinking of them like my brother, uncle, dad, grandfather, would certainly distract me from any type of crude humor going on... Thank you very much... So as the next time i am doing a task i will try that....

Thank you again.:

Char, you never stop amazing me. Getting comfortable touching patients is something that one gets use to over time. What works for me is to initially establish a good report with the patient, explaining to the patient exactly what you going to do, and while you are getting your stuff ready, ask him about his home life, hobbies, make an occasional eye contact, do your thing. Showing the patient that you are comfortable will make him/her comfortable as well. Some people deal with uncomfortable situations by being crude or sarcastic.

Al,
Great reply. That is so true that everyones tolerance to stressful situations is so different. Some people deal by making jokes, or even being rude and crude to the person that is taking care of them.... You have giving some really great tips on how to deal with some of the akward situations..... I certainly will take that forward with me... Thanks a lot...
