Yep - I've been a Mason since 1975. I was an officer for several years -

It consists of very boring business meetings, some nice charitable events, and the only "secrets" are the formal words and rituals used. Kind of cool, since they are the same as the rituals George Washington and many others went through.

Interesting history, but anyone who thinks there are deep dark secrets is way off base.

Pierre L'Enfant was an architect under General Washington's command.  Washington was the free mason but they still needed people with talents to establish what the founding fathers plans.

Free Masons are all over the world and who said L'Enfant was catholic, most free Mason's are protestant.  From my understanding, aside from their underground meetings, it was a place for drinking and womanizing, so???? Men haven't changed

Catholics are not supposed to join, but I had some in my lodge. Also there are many predominanly Jewish lodges too.

Oh, secrets? Sure, many of the founding fathers were Masons, lots of symbolism and such in DC and on our money - but I meant no DEEP DARK secrets like some say -ooooooo! Satanism! OOOOO! or taking over the world

Oooops! I forgot - yeh we are taking over the world. When that happens I'll start going to meetings again!

Yep. Pierre is buried on the hill right above John Kennedy to the right (Arlington Cemetary-the Robert E. Lee Mansion).  Pierre was a good Mason although he went a bit on the crazy side while building DC and was somewhat like a street bum after he was fired from the job (building DC).  God bless him and all Masons that have lived by the code.

God Bless the Masonic orders for establishing the healthcare facilities that they have. All are examples of medical excellence and have given many people hope when others failed. I have just returned from Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children where my child had corrective surgery for scoliosis.

Those who have worked ortho in OR know that a great deal of the instrumentation and hardware originated there (known simply in OR's as TSRH). It is where Harrington rods were invented and perfected and where the Harrington Institute is part of the facility.

The place is magical and even an old 60 year old coot can see it and feel it. The staff is wonderful, the volunteers are wonderful and the place is a well oiled machine.

There is NOTHING in place for charges. There is no billing office as it is all free. Simply amazing. We feel very blessed to have been accepted there and having the surgery there.

I am not a Mason but God Bless the Masons, Shriners, Scottish Rite orders.

Women have not either other than more rights open their mouths at the right or wrong time, often the later although.  Men, in a general sense, rule the world like it or not so we can have a beer every once in a while honey.  Nite nite

They are a fraternal and charitable organization.

1. Runs the Shriners' Hospitals which provide excellent FREE care to seriously ill or injured children.

2. Every lodge donates a lot of time and money to charitable causes.

What have YOU done for this country?

You can google it.  In a nut shell one of them alone does more for others than you and you whole family put togeteher.  Us in the charitable world know of others who are givers.  Most takers like yourself are not aware of these organizations unless you need something.  Do something for someone else besides yourself some time.  Start by using the google search instead of the shopping network.

Somewhat true Sir.  You can be a Mason and not be a Shriner, but you cannot be a Shriner and not be a Mason.  The Shriners are a sub-group of the Masons and do great wonderful service to all who seek their help and are certainly involved much in the Shriners Hospitals.  These hospital are, perhaps, the best hospitals for pediatric burns in the world hands down.  Both organizations are about service, but the Shriners are more defined in certain areas.

Plus every Mason I know is involved personally in charitable and volunteer organizations - first aid squads, fire companies, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Red Cross, etc.

Ummmm, didn't see an answer yet to what that poster has done for his/her country!

Haha! Good points! But if you want to see ANGRY posts - this is nothing! We (Moderators) delete the really bad ones! I think this was just Masons defending against what they perceived as a criticism - bacause Masons DO get some very weird criticism! Satanists, trying to control the world, etc,

Thanks, as we are just trying to help one life at a time.  Most of what we do is to advance the better interest of man or just plain feed them or deliver medical care.  I wish more people would do more though.  Good luck to you all.

Hey BBS........I am wondering, if the Free Mason are so good as many of you have said, and I am not saying they are not good, as I know nothing about them, why did you in the very first post say not to self identify? And why is this an anonymous forum?

Good question! I dislike the anonymous forums too - I guess I just didn't bother appending my name before - CaptainEricRN. I have no idea why this is anonymous anyway! I was a Masonic Officer for years.

Basically the Masonic meetings are just boring business meetings... the only secrets are the passwords and signs to open & close the meetings, plus the rituals to join the Lodge.

The activities are all charitable (we go to the VA hospital on Sundays to take the vets in wheelchairs to church), or social (pancake breakfasts, etc.) Funds raised go to charity.

The old secret words & such are traditions - it's nice to know George Washington and the others went through the very same rituals!

Masonry is a place to meet nice people and do some good charitable work. No mystery there!

AND by the way, the admonition to not identify may be because some people have weird ideas about masonry, and BBS was afraid some would "attack" us.

Other than that we are SUPPOSED to tell people about our work and be proud of being Masons. At least that's the way it is in New Jersey - each state has it's own "Grand Lodge" and I hear European masonry is much different than in the US.

Masons are good people that are actually doing something for someone besides themselves.  Good is good and Masons are good so what is wrong about that?  God bless all those good in heart and forgive all those not of this way.
