LPN - Pointless?

So I successfully completed an LPN program and passed the NCLEX in the last three months. For personal and geographical reasons, the job I have is not where I want to be, and I have been looking in the eastern part of the state (specifically Omaha and surrounding). There is NOTHING for LPNs, new or otherwise. Was the last year of my life an exercise in futility? Was working to get my LPN pointless? Every application, every ad, every job posting just screams "Sorry, you're not good enough".

After being told, for the three years it took for me to get my life together and get through school, only to come face to face with no jobs, that "nursing is a career you'll always be able to find a job anywhere", sign me:

Sorry this is happening right now with the economy. It is happening to RN grads too if you have been on NL a while.

Let me clarify by saying its not that there aren't jobs available; rather, its that no one will offer positions to LPNs. All openings are listed specifically for RNs.

I understand. But even the new RN grads are complaining that recruiters are telling them it is a recruiters market and they are holding out for experienced RNs.

That said - I cannot understand why anybody would be a LPN. They do the same job, essentially with a few differences, and get paid much less. I was married to a LVN who tired of the disparity and went to get her RN the second year of my RN program. She kept her job but got an immediate raise.

And I was poor and if it were not for my GI Bill and working during nursing school I would have had to get student loands to complete the program. But I would have done that before I settled for LVN.

Again I am sorry this is happening to you. But this economy has pointed a lot of hospitals to less staff and having those staff be essentially all RN.

I would say that it does have a lot to do with the economy. And as a LPN bridge RN new grad, I can't get into the hospitals. Mr. Brown is right  employers are looking for experienced Registered Nurses. I went back to school  for my RN after 7months of being a LPN. I would say have some patience, don't stop looking, and start the process of getting your RN license.
