I have 3 years experience as a CNA. 2 years as a unit clerk. 1 year as an LPN and just 1 month as an RN until I moved in the Portland metro area hoping to get a job in a hospital.I also just recently got an ACLS certification-thinking i'll be more "hireable". I'm still currently in the hunt for a job. I'm scared to stay in the long-term care field (more likely where I'll get hired) but it doesn't seem like there's a lot of options for new grads out there..I'm looking at getting a certificate in med-surge or ICU/PCU but it seems like from what I read, I need so and so working hours in the field that I choose to get certified in..I'm willing to take any classes for certifications just to prove I can work in a hospital, just not jump in the bachelor's/master's level yet though.Any suggestions? I already know about PALS but what else? It'll also help if you happen to know where I can take the class..Hospitals around here doesn't seem to have that option..I can't find any internships either..=c

Yes, for RN certifications you generally need two years' experience - they are for nurses experienced in those areas.

PALS and other certs may help, if the job specifies them.

What you really have to do is just accept a job anywhere available  - Med-surg jobs should be available, but you may have to wait and be patient for a while. Before long something will open up in the area you desire. No one will require a cert in Med-surg, but it will help for managerial positions.

Meanwhile, just get all the nursing experience you can, and the certs always look good on your resume. It all takes time!

Good luck!
