OK.  So I am an LPN working in Charlotte NC.  I hope when I graduate from the bridge program in a few months with my RN, that there are plenty of LPN's to take care of me if I am sick!!!!  It is unbelievable the RN's I work "under" now.  Asking questions like "what is a hand held nebulizer and what does it look like?"  and better yet ..."what is furosemide?, is that for anxiety?"  Well well my silly 2 year degree friend...I will need something for anxiety if I am ever deathly ill and you walk into my room...and its not furosemide that I'll be requesting!!!!  WOW Jesus Christ!!!  I'm not downing all RN's because I will be one myself one day soon.  But 90% of the ones I work with are complete and utter dumbasses.  My DON came and pulled me off the hall to set the inspiration and peep on a ventilator!!!  I am ventilator certified and this RN MSN is NOT!!!   and LPN's cant challenge a board?

Sorry but you sound absolutely ridiculous. Or you started this topic to hear what you know is coming. Good luck in your RN program with this stupid observation.

Ok Nurse Holly, you are obviously an educated and knowledgeable LPN, but you have a very bad attitude. So 90% of RN's are complete and utter dumbasses are we? Well then why do you want to become a part of a group of dumbasses? Why don't you continue to be an LPN and stay a smartass? Most RN's have respect for LPN's but it is attitudes like yours that foster arguments between them.  good luck in your career as the world smartest RN.

When you have experience in many facilities of different types, as many of us here do, you will discover that there is a mix of lazy, stupid , ignorant, brilliant, hardworking, caring, individuals in all disciplines: aides, LPNs, RNs, physicians, therapists, social workers, administrators, etc.

People should ALWAYS be judged as the individuals they are.

WHAT IS FUROSEMIDE?WHAT IS FUROSEMIDE?

Furosemide is a powerful diuretic (water pill). This medicine is used to treat excessive fluid accumulation and swelling (edema) of the body caused by heart failure, cirrhosis, chronic kidney failure, and nephrotic syndrome. It is sometimes used in conjunction with other blood pressure pills to treat high blood pressure.

Furosemide works by blocking the absorption of salt and fluid in the kidney tubules, causing a profound increase in urine output (diuresis). The diuretic effect of furosemide can cause body water and electrolyte depletion. Therefore, careful medical supervision is necessary during treatment.

Some of the brand names under which furosemide is marketed include:Aisemide®, Beronald®, Desdemin®, Discoid®, Diural®, Diurapid®, Dryptal®, Durafurid®, Errolon®, Eutensin®, Frusetic®, Frusid®, Fulsix®, Fuluvamide®, Furesis®, Furo-Puren®, Furosedon®, Hydro-rapid®, Impugan®, Katlex®, Lasilix®, Lasix®, Lowpston®, Macasirool®, Mirfat®, Nicorol®, Odemase®, Oedemex®, Profemin®, Rosemide®, Rusyde®, Trofurit®, and Urex®.

You should of told her that a hand held nebulizer is for a patient who is sufffering from a severe lung conditions, especially a COPD patient who is wheezing severely, and their lungs are fully constricted. It has a hose in the side of it, with a tube that you inhale the albuterol through, you have to add normal saline to it, to dilute it. It is connected to 02. I don't know who told you that furosemide is for anxiety, I know my pharmocology, or is it something i didn't study,  Itsn't  furosemide is generic for Lasix, a loop diuretic, uses CHF, HTN, edema, ascites, actions.

I have a cousin that has been an LPN for about 35 years.   (Captain you should appreciate this).   She retired from NJ state (I think home health).  She also had taken and passed the college bridge to RN, and has NEVER passed boards.  She too had the guts to say, that she knew more than an RN too (said on a regular basis).  She tried to get a job at a place down south where I used to work, and they wouldn't hire her because she couldn't pass their medication calculations test.  Ooops

AT one point or another, we have all encountered someone with a lot of education, whether it's an MD, PA, NP, who didn't know something that we all think they should know.

How true, Kittyrn! A Resident physician once asked me "Where is the sacrum?" He wasn't kidding. And many others, when we RN's would report patient problems, they would ask us what they should prescribe! We would tell them, and they would take our word for it and write the script.

A dialysis center here has RN's, techs, and one LPN. The LPN has been there for 15 years, and is clearly the most knowledgable employee there. In fact they put her in charge of patient education, and she helps with scheduling and staffing, as well as patient care in both hemo and PD. If anyone has a question they go to the LPN. BUT she just never got around to getting that RN... So she is paid as a tech, not a nurse. What a shame!

When I retired from NJ State service they were trying to phase out all the LPN's, just using RNs in the Sttte psych hospitals. I'm not really sure why!

Now for an old story that should sum it up - I'll try to keep it short.

A man was travelling thru a new town, saw an old man on his porch - he asked "Sir, what are the people in this town like? I'm thinking of moving here"

Old man:  What are the people like where you come from?

Traveller:  Oh, not friendly at all - mean, selfish, uncaring, unintelligent. I can't wait to move!

Old man: Well, I think you'll find the people here to be exactly the same.

Next day a different man was driving thru, and asked the same old man the same question.

Old man:  What are the people like where you come from?

Traveller:  Oh, very nice! Kind, caring, intelligent, very pleasant folks!

Old man:  Well, I think you'll find the people here to be exactly the same.

I know what furosemide is cutie....one of the RN's I work with asked me what it was, and asked if it was for anxiety.  Read posts more clearly before you jump to a college report on pharmaceuticals

Did I say "stupid" in my post? Oh yeah, I did. OK it's because it is an ignorant observation. I incorrectly used "stupid". And you sound ridiculous. You hope there are plenty of LPN's to care for you if you get sick? Then that makes 2 of us hoping for that. I'll bet you were still in diapers or trainers when I started pounding a floor as a RN. I have set many ventilators until (for very good reasons) most hospitals disallowed anyone other than RT to set a vent in any way. Some facilities keep RT in the unit full time.

Vent all you want. Then listen to those of us who vent on your venting. Reread what you wrote. If you don't see how it sounds after you blew off your steam - oh well. Keep on keepin' on, kid.

There you go again, jumping to conclusions, if you read my post more clearly, I was on your side. You need to give  the RN's you are working with this college pharm report, to show them, that you know your SH??????. they are roughing you up,  like preparing the ground before you plant a seed.  I wouldn't call anyone dumb, or generalized a certain group.   They are  testing your knowledge, I have  had the same problems like you working as a CNA,  you don't see me crying like a baby, and calling names. Nursing is tough, you think these RN's are testing your knowledge, wait until you become one of them, and a cocky M.D starts picking at your brain, to make himself look smart in front of his collegues are patients, seen this before. I am not against you, I am for you.

I know, but let us start by keeping it cool.  Just be careful with the generalizations as some feel there being draged/grouped with the trash.  Better luck and mix some happy in that recipe.  If you have seen what I have you may see that we have it made compairitively for the most part.  There is a lot of good that comes out of nursing, but the bull does put a wrench in it a little.

Cheers and good luck to you and all of yours - Tim, R.N.

Captain Eric said it well: all are individuals. It may not take all kinds, but we certainly HAVE all kinds in this world. Judge each one separately. The MSN may never have had experience with a ventilator before. She was honest to admit it rather than harming the patient by trying to set parameters if she did not know how.

This is too funny.  Nurse Holly..............what a horrible attitude.  Some day there might be a time when you need somebody to help you.......like an obese chf patient needs a diaper change and its a 400 pounder, would you care whether the help is an LPN or RN?  Would their  test grade he/he made on clinical calculations and pharmacology?   With that attitude, get ready for a  back injury because many will choose to leave you on your own with the 400 pounders poops.

We only have one heart, take care of it!

Pure comedy.  LOL , as I have been there myself and your are right.  I can't stop laughing, but let us not forget how gross that is or worse yet, become that way ourselves.

So true, as a hospital tech, and being a CNA for  over 8 years at the time, I have alot of experience. I have seen and done things that many newly licenses LVN's and RN's have nevered  done in a clinical  nursing setting before. Ex. when I worked in SNF, the nurses trusted me to decompact patients. I remembered working in ICU, and it was this RN, I don't know if she was a new grad or not, didn't ask. I remembered having a patient  with her, that was about to go to the floor. We discovered that the patient was compacted, and we saw blood in her diaper. The RN freaked out, about seeing blood, I guess the nurses in the previous shifts, didn't tell the nurses, that the patient suffer from hemoroids. I guess the nurses forgot to give stool softners, and the patient stool was hard as a rock, and the patient was in a medicine induce coma, so the patient couldn't push the stool out herself. I said, we better get this stool out of her, before we get her on the floor, she had mountains of stool inside her.  I instructed her on how  she do it, without irritated her hemoroids, she eventually got a doctor's order for some fleets enema, to flush out the remaiding stool, and she was order some hemoroids medication.  I didn't call her a dumbass, because she didn't  know what to do. I use my experience to help her, I knew the nurses on the floor would of ridiculed her, if she brought that patient on the floor like that. isn't  that what team nursing all about????, helping your fellow nurse or doctor out.

That's right, cuttie... I've been an EMT for a long time, and worked long term care as a nurse manager. Lots of long term care nurses know nothing about CPR, how to use the O2, or any emergency medical care. That's because they rarely use those skills. We just have to help each other!
