I'm currently working as a travel nurse in a med-surg/tele setting and I have been for the last year. And while I love traveling, the ecomony right now doesn't allow for where I would like to go. I am looking for a permanet position somewhere local to my home, however, I know that I don't want to do med-surg/tele. I would like to change gears and get into a different area of nursing. That's what I love about nursing so much is that if you get bored in one area or find that you don't like it, there are SO MANY other areas to chose from.

However, while I'm looking at job postings, everyone is looking for nurses with experience in that particular area. I am wondering, how can I get a position in an area I haven't worked in yet. I know hospitals hire new grads all the time, is there some type of transition program for nurses that want a change but that they don't have to train from "the ground up" like the new grads?

And advice from my veterans out there?

Consider hemodialysis. 1 year with the company I am with and they then allow you to work as a traveler covering our clinics where needed. Largest dialysis company in the world, clinics everywhere. No Sundays unless you do acutes. No nights unless you do emergency acutes.
