Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. recently filed for approval for its obesity drug candidate, Lorcaserin. What do you think about the increasing shift towards pharmaceuticals to treat the obesity epidemic in America?

Yes. Whatever it takes. Hopefully the prescribing authority also counsels his/her patients that the drug is only a single part of a multi-step plan in modifying their lifestyle to attain a healthful weight profile.

Pumping every other street corner with fast food 24/7 drive thru chains, and loading each order with ridiculous amounts of fat plus the "king size" portions equals the train wreck of an obese america. Go ahead watch your t.v., im sure u notice the mcdonalds commercial with the thin cool cat of a guy as the star, and dont mention the over weight soda pop junky who is the reality of an avid fast food costumer. What did u expect, theres a fast food chain genocide going on killing 300,000 ppl every year due to obese health issues. And what happens from the aftermath of mega campaigns for the promotions of these chains? oh what a coincidence, big pharma coming up with another pill as they swoop in as the 'hero'. the fda is a joke.

If it works I can see obese people using it along with a healthy diet and exercise.

I am weary of weight loss pills. Too many think the pill alone will do the job. Truly to loose weight, one needs to have the motivation to eat properly and exercise. If one can't motivate ones self, then a support group or a therapist might help. There is always going be another "Latest Obesity Pill." Drink enough water, eat smaller meals and your stomach shrinks. Keep away from the "No, No" foods and eventually the craving  for them disappears, it really does. It's really a matter of determination. So, I vote, I don't care if they approve it or not. Nothing will help keep one healthier other than a healthy diet and a good exercise routine.

On the other hand, how affective has trying to change diet actually been? For morbidly obese individuals, this could be a really helpful option to change the way that individual thinks of themselves and help them tackle major lifestyle changes.

Some of us that have endured several operations that interfered with our metabolism need help with our weight loss. I weighed 110 until I had a hysterectomy, several times adhesions removal, and an oophrectomy, and finally a knee replacement. I used to be a runner, played ball, exercise guru, but now I find myself over weight. So, before you judge me, know the whys of this situation. Motivation? I have plenty, but I need a head start, and I feel a pill could help.
