Hi, I am in the end of my second week of nursing school. I am in an accelerated nursing program that finishes in a year and 2 months. I got into this program because its was the shortest waiting list. We have already had 2 tests and i start my clinicals next month. I am also taking math and microbio at the same time. We are required to do all this at once. I am starting to freak out because i failed both my fundies exams and my exam for micro. 69 on both tests. I have studied my butt off, and have spent atleast 5-7 hours a day reading and going over the materials. I dont know what to do. My school doesnt offer any tutoring and now i am second guessing myself. Perhaps I am not smart enough to be in this program. I want to be a nurse badly. But its also hurting my financially because i live on my own, and dont have any family for support. I got enough loans just to cover my private university. What should i do??

Most programs require you to finish pre-reqs before you start nursing school.  It's insane to try and take on micro and take nursing classes at the same time, especially in an accelerated program.  I took micro and chem while working full time, and that was insane.  It's not that you are not smart enough, you are just doing the impossible.  Have you thought of dropping the program to finish your pre-reqs?

Also, I would second guess the program you are in if they don't offer tutoring.  Every school should offer some sort of tutoring.  By now, it's probably too late to drop anything and receive any money back.  However, what's more important, losing money or receiving a good education?

Oh my gosh!  not to sound outraged. :)

I agree that Micro or any prereq with nursing school is insane.   I just started about a week ago at a Junior college taking anatomy, Physiology, Speech, and Sociology.  Luckily, my Anatomy teacher is the same teacher for Physiology and a funny character he is looked at my friend and I and said, "Why on earth would yall do that to yourself?"  Yes! we enrolled in anatomy and Physiology at the same time.

Things can be done but, do you have the time to study for several hard classes in one semester?

Good luck!

Meilleurs voeux!!!!

Yes, I agree with rkobilan. I wouldn't recommend taking microbiology with nursing classes. From my experience, I took Microbiology concurrent with Anatomy and Physiology 2 and that was really hard. My school requires that you have all of your pre-reqs done before you are even able to apply into the nursing program so I was pressed for time and therefore did that, but I really wouldn't recommend it and Core nursing classes are harder than A&P2 or microbiology. Another thing, Nursing school is very competitive and grades are very important if you are planning on furthering your career and passing the NCLEX exam be very mindful of grades.  I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully withdrawing is an option there. If it is at all possible take your pre-reqs first then take the core nursing classes. Otherwise.. only have 1 pre-req class with core nurisng classes per semester.

If no tutoring is available, start a study group because I'm guessing you aren't the only one struggling if this is the way the school running. Also, I believe the faster program may not always be the best program. Is this program accredited? And what percent of graduates pass the NCLEX exam each year? Good luck in nursing school and best of luck to you.
