Posted over 3 years ago Hello, I am a recent graduate from a B.S.N nursing school program. I took the NCLEX exam exactly one month later and passed. I am currently looking for jobs but nothing seems to be available. There are no internship positions available because the deadline to apply for these psotions was October/November 2009. Every hospital I've spoken with in the DFW metroplex only want nurses with experience. I've thought about going to nursing homes. I don't have a problem with working in a nursing home, I just don't want to lose the nursing skills I have acquired while in school. I even thought about applying for a nursing assitant positioin just to get my foot in the door...Do you think that sounds ridiculous? Please help, I have the letters B.S.N., RN, but no job... Sincerely, A weary RN |

| Posted over 3 years ago You won't lose your skills in a nursing home, believe me! Long term care is my specialty as an administrator, and our RN's need excellent assessment skills, and must closely monitor problems like skin breakdown, fall risks, cognitive deficiencies, as well as supervise other nurses in their medications and treatments... while exercising management skills. Working in any specialized unit in a hospital will mean that you will concentrate on only certain skills - the only place to work where you are exposed to almost evereything is med-surg... but if that's not available right now, don't settle for nurse aide work in a hospital, if you can be a professional RN somewhere else.

| Posted over 3 years ago I have only been an RN for two years, but I have to agree with captain eric...take the RN position in the nursing home. If you can get one that is part of a system, like here in my area we have catholic health system which owns a few hospitals, nursing homes, home nursing agencies and ambulatory centers. Then you will be able to put in for hospital positions as someone with seniority. |

| Posted about 3 years ago You know you might want to get a little creative. Instead of looking in the newspapers or on-line nationwide jobs search engines (no offense Monster.com), check your local health departments and state government/school websites. You may finds some nursing jobs in there that are at unexpected places. Maybe not exactly what you are looking for, but better than not working at all. |

| Posted about 3 years ago I was having the same problem. I passed NCLEX last month and got my license but wasn't finding any advertised openings for new grads, or one that they were willing to consider a new grad. I started just walking into SNFs because they might not advertise due to the cost. It paid off, I start this Tuesday. While the pay is not as much as I had hoped for, I will get the experience I need to back up my degree and license. Any experience at all is better than none at all. And you aren't going to lose your skills, they were drilled into you so deep they should be second nature by now. Besides, you can always take update classes and volunteer at a hospital to keep up with your desired specialty and get to know those who can help you get what you want. |
