I'm currently in my second year or college, getting my BSN. What's the best way to get my Master's and certification in midwifery so I can hopefully start my own practice sometime in the next 20 years or so? I want to get at least a decade's worth of nursing experience before I become a midwife, I just wonder how difficult it will be to try and balance work, family and getting an advanced degree?

Thanks, I appreciate your response. I've always been very stubborn, persistent in getting what I want so I imagine that trait will come in handy at some point.

Hi. As I understand it, by 2015 all certified nurse-midwives will be required to be trained at the doctoral level -- masters level programs for CNMs are being phased out.  (This move has caused some controversy.)

One thing to keep in mind is the more you can plan in advance, the better. Knowing what your family and professional goals are in advance will help you plot out a doable road map to get there.
