Posted over 3 years ago I am tired of the reactions people get when that ask what your profession is and you say nurse. Then they say Oh..you're a RN, and you say LPN, then they say Ohh.., like a LPN isn't a nurse. We LPNs bust our humps, probably harder than alot of RNs, but we don't get the same respect. I have found that alot of RNs look down their noses at us, like we aren't much!!! Am I the only one or do I have other nurses(LPNs) that feel this way and how can we overcome this stigma? |

Posted about 3 years ago I understand your pain. The hardest year of my life was getting thru LPN school. I am however an RN, but I remember the " Oh you're an RN" statements when I was an LPN. I've only been a nurse for 3 years and I have a lot of respect for the LPNS i work with. Most of them have been nurses for many many years and have more knowledge and experience then I probably will ever have. I go to them regularly for advice. Even before I will go to my supervisor. Remember the phrase " it takes a village to raise a child" ? Well, it takes a village to give awesome care to 1 client. From the maintenance man all the way up to the MD......

Posted about 3 years ago I get this too at times. I think it's because I have been a nurse for a long time so they assume I'm an RN. Or a former co-worker will say "you should come apply where I work" then turn around and say, oh I forgot you're an LPN, don't bother, they won't even want to talk to you". Well I guess I don't want to talk to them either then, LOL.

Posted about 3 years ago I am very fortunate...I work with a great bunch of RN's who all appreciate me but what REALLY ticks me off are the new grads! They've just graduated from nursing school and have NO experience but think they need to treat me like I don't know anything!! These are the same grads who get hired and then have the nerve to ask ME questions. What could I possibly know o great and mighty RN?! I should mention I am only a few classes away from being an RN...I do respect them, but respect is earned--not a gift upon graduation from school. By they way, if I ever treat a co-worker (PCT or LPN) that way, I hope someone smacks me!!

Posted about 3 years ago I have been an LPN for 10 years now and understand what you are going through. The only reason I am not an RN is due to Algebra!!! I passed nursing math classes with a 4.0!! It is not right that people think we are not as good as an RN. I have met and been a patient of RN's who don't need to be in the field. People forget that many LPN's have many more years of experience than some of the new grad RN's. The only difference between an LPN and RN is that they can push IV meds, hang blood products and be a charge nurse!!! How many people know that!!??

Posted about 3 years ago i was getting fingerprinted for my In-home supportive service job, and I told the fingerprinting guy that I already been fingerprinted for my nursing licenseing, and he immediateally said was I a RN, so yes, the RN title is already thought of first. Girl, we got to get it. I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

Posted about 3 years ago I went through that too. I hated being treated like I was crap B/C I didn't have a degree. I will say having been an LPN prior to being an RN made me a way better nurse. Cleaning crap doesn't scare me like it does some other nurses. I never understood nurses who get into nursing and then think they're too good to claen a pt up. Claire Kruszka

Posted about 3 years ago OMG! This has been a "pet peeve" of mine for a looong time! I am an LPN w/QUALITY experience in: Nephrology, Med/Surg, Phys. Rehab, Psych, ICU/CCU and Pediatrics, as well as Office Nursing w/In-office Surgical assistance. I am ACLS Certified, PALS certified and have utilized Con't Ed to further my knowledge in each specialty area I've worked. Does anyone care?!?!? I get the "oh, you're an RN" bit alot, too--and even though I'm considering taking some on-line courses towards my RN I must admit that it really ticks me off that in order to get the respect and/or Salary I deserve I have to go back to school. I agree, most young Nurses coming straight out of school as an RN (Or Heaven forbid! ) or BSN have a very stilted view of our profession -- most will go out of their way to not change a patient, do oral care, Trach care or anything else that either smells or is messy. Wish they would stay OUT of the clinical arena, and let those of us who really DO care do the bedside Nursing. But, in return (in a perfect world!) we would be compensated for our skills & dedication as well! Oh - and another thing -- anyone ever get ticked when reading Nursing journals? You'd think that LPN's were nothing more than glorified aides!

Posted about 3 years ago Yes, I've read many nurses's journals and you are so Right, they don't respect us for what we do, so how is anyone else going to do it. I have run across some Rns that wil admit if it weren't for a Lpn they met along the way, they wouldn't know some of the things that they learned. I just wish that eveyone especially new grads, would just give us our props and see us as equals.
