If you can, use a clipboard to help with taking notes. Ask if you can observe any procedures whether they are related to what you are studying or not. The more knowledge, the better. Ask the nurses how a typical day is or are there any special situations they remember that they can talk to you about. Last but not least, bring your sense of humor and interest in learning.

The best advice I has is this... Just get in there and do it! Don't stand in the corner and be quite -- you learn so much more when you get your feet wet!!

I am in the midst of my nursing and paramedic clinicals, my advice is be on time (what I mean to "be on time" is be there 15 minutes before clinicals start), be prepared, have a clean and pressed uniform, be well groomed, take initiative, be proactive, show confidence in your skills, ask many questions. Do as much as you are allowed to do, within the realm of your skills. Try to get as much patient contact as possible, talk to each patient you come in contact with. Treat your clinicals as a job interview. Be positive, take criticism as a learning tool, and don’t take it personal. Be professional and courteous, you are there to learn, not to socialize. Get plenty of rest... And finally, wear compression stockings. Good luck!

As an instructor myself, I would say: 1) Do your prep work. 2) Be on time (lol, Al-we must have had the same instructor as far as time management!). 3) If you're not busy with your client, ask what else needs to be done-help another student, help your nurse with another client, ask for something to do. You will get out of the experience exactly what you want.
