"I am a relatively new CNA. I had about 4-5 months experience right out of my training program. I worked through an agency in long term care as a "floater". I was never really oriented or trained on the job after my class and certification. I moved to another state andhave been out of work for over a year. I am now working again. I am very shy and unsure of myself. I need some advice on relating to elderly patients especially those with Alzhiers and Dementia. Also tips on redirecting. Thanks. Any advice or words of encouragement are appreciated."

Dementia patients can be a hoot sometimes!....I work on a subacute/longterm care unit at my job, I've been there for about 5 years now. I always try to validate what my patients are saying or doing, unless it is harming them in someway. I also try to redirect them or orientate them to person, place, and time whenever possible, especially when their family visits, it's a good opportunity. I also find it interesting and beneficial to ask them questions or talk about their past whenever possible. It seems to me they rememeber those times more clearly, and for some, it makes them so happy that someone has taken an interest in them. It also makes it easier for me to help them when they're having a not so good day, because I know what they are interested in and can redirect them or talk to them about something they like.
