Hi I am a massage therapist and am considering going back to school to become an RN. I would like to specialize in labor/delivery. I have one year of university but no science taken. My question is what is the best route to take. I have considered becoming a Certified Nursing assistant first and then continue on with my associates while working as a  CNA and then get my bachelors while working with my associates. But I don't want to waste my time going  through the training of the CNA if I just have to start from scratch to get my associates. Do the classes you take to be a CNA count toward your degree or not? And should I take some classes at a community college before I even apply to a nursing program at all? Any help would be appreciated.

Also on a different note is it possible to shadow a nurse in a hospital for a few hours? Any thing required to do this?

Thank you

No, in no state that I know of are CNA classes at a college level, and they will not count. All being a CNA will get you is experience in dealing with patients and nursing care, and some earnings (but not much, unfortunately).

You could go for the associates degree, or first become an LPN/LVN, which usually takes a year. Then you would be making better money and can take a program to "bridge" over to RN. It depends on your financial situation.

Shadowing? Never heard of anyone doing it, but you should ask someone at the hospital - I guess it might be possible.
