Posted about 3 years ago Hello my name is LaToya, The discussion title says considering nursing, but nursing is something I'm truely passioanate about. I go to a local community college and I have six classes to take before I'm eligible to apply for the clinical component. This is what I'm afraid of I have three children all under the age of five and a husband and did I mention a fulltime job? My counselor told me "tell your children that you probably won't see them, and your house won't be clean because you will never be home and when you are you will be tired". This is discouraged me because I cant neglect my children and my home is nursing clinical that challenging that I won't see my family? Did I mention that it's suppose to be a part time program and I can't quit my job? Can someone please lead me in the right direction with honest answers. If nursing will be too much for me in my situation please let me know. But I am a fighter and I want a better life for myself and my children please help me!! |

| Posted about 3 years ago Hey There La Toya... I am not a nurse yet, but am actively trying to get in to nursing school. However, my mom is the secretary for the nursing program at her local community college & that has been what she has done for over half of my life. I am 35 years old & have fought with the idea of going to nursing school because I knew just from all of the things that she has told me & talked about throughout the years that nursing school is NOT for the faint of heart. I knew it was extremely tough & that it is very demanding of your time & energy. I have no idea about where you are in the world, but it sounds like you definitely WANT to go to nursing clinicals, (clinicals are just a part of the nursing program where I live, there is no difference). Anyway, I completely understand that you can't just quit your job & that you can't just leave your kids & never see them. I don't know that everything that was said to you is accurate, but basically - you will be at home & you will see your kids, but you will be busy studying, writing care plans & all of that. You won't have time to be tired. (at least thats what my mom says). Perhaps you could consider doing a nursing assistant course or two (here we have various levels of nursing assistants), & do that for a living til all of your kids are in school & then you'd have a little bit more time to focus on your own education. Anyway - I am sure that wasn't much help, but I wish you all the luck in the world. It sounds like you've got your hands full. :) ~ Amy |

| Posted about 3 years ago Thank you very much for both the replys. I just want the best for my family but I won't neglect them period. I think I will change my major and come back to nursing when I'm able to focus on it entirely. Thank you so much for being honest! |
