Posted about 3 years ago Okay- I probably should have posted this in the "venting zone", but I am going to try an hold my temper. I am asking for honest answers. Why are we, as a society, so against breastfeeding? Those of you who know me and my avatar, I am a lactation consultant. I am NOT a "nipple nazi" or any of the other deragatory titles LC's are usually givien. I was a RN for years before I be came an IBCLC, RLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Registered Lactation Consultant). On a daily basis, I am in contact with nurses that are totally against mom's breastfeeding. So much so that when breastfed babies are taken to the nursery, they are give formula. We do not have "rooming in" at our local hospital. To me, this practice is totally unethical not mention against patietn rights which I would think would be illegal. It is not jus the nurses, though, patient's family members are also barriers against successful breastfeeding. I really do not know how I can help these mom's that really want to breastfeed, but are made to feel like they have made the wrong choice by their family and L & D staff. What is society's problem??? Breasts were designed for feeding human babies! Thanks for listening to my rant. |

| Posted about 3 years ago Great article! Very interesting. You know my biggest issue is with "us" (nurses). I can see a mom prenatally and she will be prepared to breastfeed. She gets to the hospital to deliver and the first thing the nurses do is stick a damn bottle in this baby's mouth because "he's crying" or "acting like he wants to eat". You know who benefits if moms decide to pump and bottle feed their babies. The formula companies. Check your labels... most of your bottles are made by companies that own formual companies or they are tied together some way. Don't get me wrong, a lot of mom's need to pump because of work, school, or other reasons. I am not denegrating pumping, but breastfeeding at it's core IS FEEDING FROM THE BREAST, people! We (humans) are the only mammals that drink another mammals milk. How gross is that??? Now that I sound like a total "nipple nazi", I will get off my soapbox and let others have a turn! |

| Posted about 3 years ago Part of it is that we are still living in somewhat of a Puritanical society - sex, breastfeeding, exposed breasts, are unfortunately considered "dirty" by some misguided people. |
