Posted almost 3 years ago I am considering becoming a nurse, an LVN/LPN to be exact, in California. I was wondering if anyone, with first hand experience or knowledge, could suggest an area in which I should or could volunteer in order to get an idea if that is the direction I want to go. I am aware of hospitals or LTC facilities; I specifically want to know what area(s) within those or other facilities I should inquire about volunteering. I would even consider working PT doing something clerical if you think that would give me exposure to the nursing experience. Any ideas or suggestions????? |

| Posted almost 3 years ago Any position in a facility will give you some exposure to the nursing field, but only one can really show you the grunt work that LPN's must often do - and that is CNA, or nursing assistant. If you can't put up with it, then you will know that nursing is not for you. If you volunteer, volunteer to work directly with the residents - feeding them, helping them ambulate, and anything else they allow you to assist in. |

| Posted almost 3 years ago Thank you for very much for your replys, however my question wasn't really answered. In order for me to volunteer as a CNA or NA I have to study to become one and if that was the case then I would seek employment instead of volunteering. As suggested in one of the replys "...volunteer to work directly with the residents..." which is what I would like. As stated in my original question, could anyone suggest an area in which I should or could volunteer? What do I ask and where, to whom? Do I just walk into a LTC or Hospital and say, hey I want to volunteer to work with residents..., do you know what I mean? I don't want to be thrown into the gift shop and at 44 I'm sure I'm too old to be a candy striper. |

| Posted almost 3 years ago Yep, GITANO is right - just walk in. As a nursing home and assisted living administrator, my facilities always had people walking in and asking if they could help out - One of my own full time nurses even volunteered at a different facility, feeding residents every Wednesday at dinner. The administrator or Director of Nursing will tell you what they need and what you can do. Large faciities have entire volunteer departments, in smaller facilities it is more informal. No training needed other than what they will show you. In NJ, CNA's do not have licenses, they have certifications. That means you too can perform the same functions as they do on a volunteer basis. Whereas, you could not perform the duties of a licensed nurse. If you wanted to actually work as a CNA for pay, you would need to be certified - many facilitires do the training themselves, or you could locate a course on your own. Duties are very basic - feeding, dressing, washing, assisting with activities of daily living. Good luck! |
